Whether it be Societal unrest, a real pandemic, climate change, famine, economic collapse, EMP etc so you reach into your closet and pull out your kevlar vest and helmet, lock and load your AR15 and strap your glock 17. You got your back up Mosseburg shotgun and back up long guns ready to roll.

All you got is your guns, your kevlar and the Armor of God.

God lol, he ain’t helping anyone and it’s the same god as the other side has. Ridiculous number of guns, it’s hard enough carrying your personal weapon, it’s mags and rounds, then side arm and its mags, then cleaning kits for both, spares such as firing pins, battle field first aid kit including tourniquet, oh and a modern respirator system as well and it’s support pieces. Then unlike the movies you need spare underwear, spare clothing, a towel, tooth brush and tooth paste, and the big one, this is the killer - Water, you never see in those Hollywood movies them running around with a litre of water.
you weapon choice, AR15 - 5.56 a round that tends to wound and not put people down. A shotgun even more ammo, how heavy are you now. Do not expect to be in that house unless it’s a bunker, the first petrol bomb, drone or rocket strike with set it on fire and you are moving out.
as someone mentioned, people survive by banding together not as solitary creatures, yes hiding some place remote would likely let a few live but only those that know how to survive or can learn stuff. Humans would need to form groups, collectives, ideally without people who have extreme views ( politics and religion).

5.56 will kill in distances under 300 yards barring body armour. If you are hold up inside during a crisis barring the military nobody is coming once they realise you are armed, even if they are armed they won't risk it. Trying to throw a petrol bomb at a house will get you shot, mauraders would move on to easier pickings.
Probably you could hold up at home for a depending on the situation.
If you need to bug out on foot you are going to drop the AR15, shotgun and ammunition, the kevlar and probably just roll with a canteen, some food, a 9mm glock and two magazines.

Hmm the 5.56 will kill… which is why the US military has moved to 6.8mm because they have found it does not put people down effectively. Across the pond this was noticed when we moved from 7.62 to 5.56. Yes 5.56 is great as there is a ton of ammunition. Effective range on target of a pistol versus a rifle (including AR’). In the real world without more people to stag on, you get burned quickly, throw in cheap drones dropping incendiary stuff, even that does not help.
Safety in numbers, groups live longer, support each other, an individual or a small family, dead in hours.
@BoopBoopBeep with respect, you will have managed that with a huge logistics train providing support and with a set time frame where you are without support. Yes doing it for a living helps but most forget about logistics of it all.

Actually, no, towards the end of my career when I "did something else" our logistics stopped at the secured airspace we could enter through, and a lot of times not that. There was no supply chain, we were expected to be self-sustaining once we hit the ground. You're out of ammo? Pick up the dead guy's. You're out of food? Go kill something or take it. There's no PX or S4 outside the wire once you get that far outside.

I completely agree with you that there's safety in numbers. I was merely commenting on the notion of carrying a combat load isn't like running a marathon. There's also of course a big difference in patrol load, infiltration load, SAR load and PSD load and a host of others, but realistically a 15lb will sustain you indefinitely outside of ammo. There's plenty of the latter in this country if you're not married to a particular caliber. It's not like every American is going to burn through 100 boxes on day one. Most of them will be dead before they can use it. Grab some good stuff as you go along. Carry 40lbs of that, you're good to go for a while. "Go shopping" as needed. Carrying that's easier than doing a marathon. Haha, having done both at the same time, believe me...

Way more important to have that other guy/gal that can keep watch while you sleep. We always worked in teams at least for just that reason. Quads were preferred. Takes more to sustain and harder to move silently, but a worthwhile tradeoff most of the time.

The 5.56 is an intermediate round. The reason we have intermediate rounds is because after examining fire fights in ww1, ww2& korea it was found that most firefights and most kills were happening between 100-300 yards despite the rifles of the day like the M1903, M1 Garrand, Lee Enfield, kar98, Mosin Nagant firing a full rifle cartridge having a range of well over 1000 yards and most infantryman not being able to hit a target over 300 yards.
The 7.62 was a mistake made by the US military that we forced on our NATO partners rather than adopt an intermediate round which they adopted anyway.
The reason the US military is adopting the 6.8mm cartridge is because body armour is becoming so prolific, the us military encountered insurgents in Iraq wearing them. When the us military switched from the long barrelled M16 to the shorter M4 they found that though it was lighter the M4 had worsened ballistics. The US military has run a few different competitions for a rifle to replace the M16/m4 which gave us great systems like the scar, ACR, hk416, xm8 etc but the problem was the 5.56mm round. The US military want a round that will penetrate body armour, have longer range and will be lighter, which is why the 6.8mm will have plastic cartridges so it will be a 3rd of the Wight of a 5.56mm cartridge.
The new Xm7 will also have smart scopes. This will have night vision, thermal optics, motion sensors, ballistics calculator l, range finder, digital display overlay. It's a whole new game.

I wouldn't call it backtracking. The 5.56mm was the way to go when nobody was wearing vests and they wanted infantry men to have more firepower and carry less weight.

The best way to survive an apocalypse-type lawless scenario is always to be in a community. Humans are pack animals. No matter what kind of weapon you have, it's a lot easier to take down a single person than a whole group. Plus in a group you can do things like gather supplies, set up camp, and sleep without having to constantly watch your own back. I know my group. If things go crazy, we will work together to get through it.

@Agape93 being weak or handicapped would be a disadvantage, yes, but not nearly as big of a disadvantage as being alone. Also you can't just decide to not get injured, that's not really a strategy. You can minimize your risk for injury, and your risk of dying as a result of any injury, by being in a group.

You're not listening too well. I'll explain in detail for you then.

In groups, there are social dynamics. How the group is run, determines the dynamic. If the group is say, primarily catholic, you can expect them to govern through a catholic lense, to the likely detriment of the group, especially in regards to defense against outsiders. If the group is held by anarchists you bet they'll be more pro freedom of individuals, and fight hard against enemies seeking to exert control. If they are controlled by the unprepared, you can bet it'll be weakly governed and they'll be inclined to take your stuff to keep others alive, to your personal detriment.

You must also then factor in people with a tyrannical mindset, one of control. They could seek to control the group, outsiders or both.

Or like for example people like me, you don't want people like me to have power, because people will die, and it won't be pretty or humane.

That's not even touching on outsiders trying to attack or subvert your group. Going back to me as an example, if your group has stuff my group needs to survive, I'd happily wipe out your group to ensure mine survives.

The world isn't all koombaya, where community saves the day. That's not how the world works.

@Agape93 i understand what you're saying. All those same risks still exist when you're alone though. Someone can still try to control you, you can still be bad at deciding what to do, and you can still have things someone else wants. When you are in a group, especially one you have established beforehand and not just strangers, you still have those risks but you also have many advantages that you can't have when you're alone. I never said a group guarantees survival. I said it's the best chance. Even if it's a bad or weak group, you're probably still more likely to survive if you stay in it than if you go out alone. The only time being alone is better is if the group completely breaks up and turns on each other, in which case you are already alone really.

All times where rule of law didn't exist, where you had to band together and trust others to survive.

Weak groups will get you killed. So will following the wrong people. Hell, even if you do survive, what's the price you're willing to pay? Work the fields or you get exiled or killed? Have your wife, sister, daughter, be forced to have children to keep up populations or just to please those in charge? Would you be willing to murder and rob if you were told to, and if not, what if they attached a death penalty for failing to do so?
These aren't unrealistic, these things have already happened, and so much worse.

At least on your own, you won't have to be worried about betrayals or being stuck in one place with an enemy at the gates.
