You've missed a step: men are mentioned, just not as "men"; they're "sailors" or "miners", or whatever they were doing that put them in position to be victimized. Men aren't valued for what they are, but what they do.
Warren Farrell wrote a book about this (and some other, related issues). If you really want to understand, then track that book down and read it. Then watch a few videos of interviews with him; get a sense (which needn't be too deep, but still, a sense) of the guy's message and personality.
Then watch footage of the University of Toronto protest against his appearance. That will tell you all you need to know.
What was the last time women and children was only mentioned. The titanic maybe? Not even all the school shootings.
