American friends, when a new person moves into your neighborhood, do you actually go over to welcome them Or is it only in the movies?

A new girl moved in across the street a year ago and I went over and met her and her parents. More them than her.
Somebody else moved in across from her 2 or 3 months ago and I've still not seen them at all. Another house just went up for sale 3 days ago 3 houses behind hers so, we'll be getting more new neighbors, soon.
I've been coming here since the house was built in `63 for my grandparents and have been living here for 4 years and nobody up here EVER comes to visit and I hardly know anyone up here other than to see them walking by every great once in a while.
At my house, nearly the entire town knew me or at least my family, partly because we'd been in that house since 1936. If someone new moved in, I'd eventually meet up with them and be casual friends but, still, none ever came over to visit. I'd always wave to the twins across the street and they'd wave back at me but, we rarely ever talked. When we did, it was because I went over to talk to them!
Another girl moved in 2 doors away from me and I went over and offered to help her move in. But, we still never hung out very much. I'd wave to her and she, at me, if we saw each other but, she never came to visit me and I'd been to her place for a few minutes a couple times.
SOME people actually go over and intro themselves but, not that much, anymore. It used to be tradition that you'd bake a cake or some cookies and take them to the new neighbors as a gift and intro but, I have a feeling that stopped after the drug era in the late `60's when we started hearing about people putting drugs into things like Halloween treats.
Yes sometimes. I've introduced myself to sveral neighbors after moving in and talked to some new ones. Some people are social and some are not. Most are very appreciative. Just a matter of breaking through the barrier. Around my area, houses are spread out so it's harder to engage. Where I grew up, homes were ontop of each other, so I knew all my neighbors within the block.
The movies are not representative of America. Hollywood is nuts!
I think now it's probably only in the movies and it would also depend on the location.
Back in the 90's, when we first moved into our house that we have now, the neighborhood families were more connected and actually went outside and the adults talked amongst each other. Now it's like everyone is so busy with the own selfish lives that they don't have time for getting to know their neighbors. We did however, have one recent neighbor and his family that moved in a few years ago and they introduced themselves and so we did the same, but other neighbors, they really do stick to themselves sadly. Maybe it's also because they were Asian like us, that is why they were nicer? I don't know but it's sad if it is again attributed to racism!
Many do lol. It’s important to have good neighbors.. they keep an eye out in the neighborhood.
On another note.. with gated homes…
When my French Brother in law’s parents came to stay with us.. they were surprised that no one here has gated homes… except for those who live in 20 million dollar homes.
I am also surprised to see homes in France, Italy.., homes are gated.
France laws make it much more difficult to remove someone trespassing. That is controllable of populationb ecause they took away your right to use a weapon. You can buy a weapon, but use it, you go to prison. In USA, it's a little more supporting of individual rights, although those seem to be eroding in areas.
I don't understand French thieves and home squaters... in the USA they'd bring an electric saw, cut the gate down, or smash a car through it, break down the door... and move in. it's not complicated. sarcasm...

Yes and no, there are definitely a lot of people who do it but not everyone does. Depends on where you live and how friendly people are honestly. Sometimes they bring you food sometimes it's just, "hello, welcome to the neighborhood" it definitely happens but not as much as in the movies and shows.
We used to “back in the day”. People that lived in my neighborhood own their houses so they’ve been there for decades now. Now the owners get together and talk smack/nitpick about renters.
When I changed locations in Alaska we met our neighbors, but that was on base. It definitely happens, I’m just not sure how often anymore. People seem a lot more closed off now.
I eventually meet them. My neighbor next door is the one who meets them within days of moving in.
In my neighborhood we all know each other. Some of us have known each other for several decades. The longest term neighbors who are still alive I've known since 1966.
Well if you're from where I'm from which is the hood, then... Hardly..
But a nice Cal de sac area where everybody probably knows everybody... Yeah.. It has happened once though.. When a neighbor welcomed my and the fam in a new apartment.. With a pie.. That was nice.. That lady was nice..
Yes, I had a new neighbor across the street from my old house, about 15 years ago. The other neighbor said "hey let's go give the new neighbor a beer", so we did and welcomed him to the neighborhood. My brother and I went home and brought some moonshine across the street and gave him a couple shots. He had to stop doing his yard work after that and go sit down.
I just met my new nextdoor neighbor yesterday. I saw them walike by so i went outside to introduce myself.
For me personally no but I live in a rural area with not many houses.
I think this isn’t very common in America, at least as much as maybe the 50s 60s or 70s.
Maybe in some places, but not where I live. I wouldn't even know if someone new moved in. Where I live, it's more common for a new neighborhor to introduce themselves. But even this rarely happens, though some church people did that to us once
Not Really But Will Say "HI" When Seeing Them and maybe Ask Questions of Things. xxoo
No I do not. Some will welcome them to the neighborhood but not for hospitality reasons. They need to find out more about them so they will have gossip to tell their friends.
I welcome about 4 or 5 houses in either direction... beyond that... I'm never going to see them again.
My parents always greet new neighbors. My mom usually makes cookies or brownies for them.
I bought a 'welcome wagon' basket and left it on their porch. (Amazon)
yep... one way or another, we always reach
to be fair... there are parts of America in which you approach a neighbor they shoot you dead when you step on their lawn or driveway
all across... but also Texas, lol
That's a movie thing, I don't even know how many people live in the neighborhood, and I don't care. I just wish it was less
Usually we do. Communities often have a "welcome wagon" which is a couple of people who will stop by with a basket of gifts for the new people.
Many neighborhoods have annual block parties where a street will be closed off and neighbors will gather, have a cookout, while kids are running around playing.
That was a thing it isn't really a thing anymore.
If they're on my street, I'll go introduce myself and bring some sort of treat.
I don't know any neighbors who have been here for under 15 years.
we welcome them
Don't call me American, call me Texan
