Because they've abandoned legitimate concerns for the working class in favor of currying favor with ideologues. The ideals of free expression, due process, and meritocracy- you know, the core pillars of liberalism- have been abandoned for fear of giving offense, fear of having "offenders" on the streets, and "representation", since they think people can't relate to anyone who doesn't look, or think, exactly like them.
By reputation, the working class isn't well educated, and there's certainly some truth to that, it's not the vacuum that it's assumed to be; I've had some fascinating conversations about the relative merits of Italian and German operas with homeless people. The working class isn't stupid. And this is a problem, because the Democratic media blitz pretty much relies on people not asking questions. Middle- and upper-class people aren't (inherently) stupid, either, but they ARE much more prone to groupthink, and that's pretty much defined by not asking questions.
Currently, in the US, the conservative party is the Republicans, the liberal party is the Republicans, and the batshit insanity part is the Democrats.
