If war is so terrible, why do we do it?

many reasons. if they don't have sanctity of life, like republicans have, then death is not important to leaders... because not "my own" death.

putin and most wars are for getting land and resources taking from others. the gain is worth the loss for such leaders.

similarly, roosevelt dnc in 1940s "liberated" instead of responding only to the ONE who attacked america.

a few wars are when the weaker one asked for help, to help the victim, u. s. helped afghanistan against soviet and helped:

iraq against iran but kurds against iraq.

kuwait against iraq

south korea against communists.

south vietnam against communist delaying its spread 20 years.

libya and syria against isis' etc. etc. etc. helping the victim is important... just don't give too much when you have debt as reckless biden!

I would say mostly "we" don't do it. Your average citizen that is. Leaders of various groups, governments, sects, etc, make those decisions on our behalf. And we, if we love our group, we then want to protect, defend, and support it, and what it means to us. But that's secondary to the initial act of declaring war. I wager, if you ask the average citizen in any country about the wars they're currently in, I think you'd find that most would say "If we didn't have to be there, I'd rather we weren't." Most people don't want war, in my experience.

Sometimes, as in the case of Ukraine, to repel invaders, but MUCH MORE OFTEN to bully smaller, weaker countries and peoples, thus robbing them of their wealth and bringing it to the assailing nation, which can even impose a dictatorship on its conquered foe.

Sometimes its simple. Sometimes its not. For Ukraine its simple. Fight, or be exterminated.  For Israel its simple. Fight or be exterminated. For China, Russia, Iran, North Korea its not so simple.

It's usually the higher ups that start the wars using the common man as pawns.. They are started for a variety of reasons, religious, economic, territory, political, ideological and stuff like that..
