Of course, generally, the US doesn't start wars. For one thing, it sort of can't. In the United States, to formally engage in war, war has to be declared and Congress has to do that, not the President. So, for instance, after Pearl Harbor, FDR had to make an address to Congress to declare war on Japan.
Now, for something like Operation Desert Storm in 1991 or the post-9/11 wars, these weren't formal wars involving a declaration of war, but they did involve Congressional approval first. But the post-9/11 wars were just that; a response to 9/11.
I think the last war that the US genuinely started may have been the Spanish-American War in 1898.
I can't think of an actual "We started this" war during the 20th or 21st centuries other than Operation Iraqi Freedom (the Iraq War begun in March 2003) would likely qualify though; it was begun under the pretense of a proactive move in the wake of 9/11. However, that was a bullshit war - many said "war for oil". It wasn't; it was really a family feud between the Bushes and Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.
Here's the story...
Operation Desert Storm, during the George HW Bush aka Bush 41 Administration, was with a coalition of powers to remove Iraq from Kuwait; the Iraqis invaded Kuwait in August 1990. That war ended quickly and Bush got shit for it for not removing Saddam Hussein from power, but he did the right thing. In response, Hussein later tried to have Bush assassinated when he was the new former President and visiting Kuwait in April 1993 during the Clinton Administration. (Clinton responded in June with a missile strike against Iraqi Intelligence, but that wasn't much.) The Bush family didn't forget that assassination attempt, so when George W. Bush aka Bush 43 became President after Clinton, Saddam's time was bound to come to an end. 9/11 was heinous and Iraq had nothing to do with it, but there's a silver lining to every cloud and 9/11 and "weapons of mass destruction" were the perfect foil to drum up a pretense for war against Iraq.

@msc545 No, they weren't.
Afghanistan is in response to 9/11 and the Taliban supporting Al Qaeda who committed 9/11. No 9/11, no Afghanistan.
Korea was not started by the US at all. It began with an invasion of North Korea into South Korea. The UN then issued Resolution 84 in 1950 which led to UN involvement to defend South Korea.
digitallibrary.un.org/record/112027?ln=en&v=pdf
The Vietnam War began in 1954 long before the US was involved. The US became significantly involved after the Gulf of Tonkin incident in 1964 which led to the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution.

Ukraine is not the US's doing at all.
ADVICE:
Don't be an idiot. It's very unbecoming. Do your due diligence like I just did. - 1 y
@goaded The Russians invaded Ukraine - that is true. However, they did so inresponse to the US repeatedly making noise about admitting Ukraine to NATO which worried the Russians a great deal, since that would have given the US the ability to establish military bases in Ukraine as well as missile launch facilities. The US had previously assured the Russians it would NOT admit Ukraine to NATO for just this reason, but things changed. See:
www.cato.org/.../us-nato-helped-trigger-ukraine-war-its-not-siding-putin-admit-it - 1 y
@msc545 It's not a requirement, though. There's none in Poland, for example. It wouldn't have been unreasonable to negotiate continued use of Sebastopol and no US bases, it was unreasonable to invade. More importantly, NATO has never invaded a country to make it part of NATO, and it never will.
- 1 y
@goaded It is not a stated requirement but it certainly is an unstated one. The use of existing bases for US forces is functionally the same as the US building bases there - just cheaper. NATO doesn't need to invade countries to get what it wants - it has other more subtle ways of doing this. Politically, NATO and the US are the same thing.

Thank you.

711 opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. For almost 200 years, the US has started wars or jumped into wars that were already started. FDR began to the war against Japan by committing acts of war against Japan such as blockades and ignoring all diplomatic attempts by Japan. FDR even allowed the attack on Pearl Harbor, when he knew it was coming and could have easily prevented it.
Since WW2 they US has started many wars, because it is good politics and because because defense contractors are making $billions.
30 Reply2.6K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. Well not always. You can't pin WWI & II on the US. Nor Ukraine. Cold War I was more from Soviet aggression ( I am saying CWI because with Russia & China as they are there has to be at least trading blocks and a CWII). Korea was mostly due to North Korean aggression. Arguably Vietnam too.
Post 1900 I think you could reasonably characterize most wars having been forced onto the US or US response to aggression by other countries and often just supplying material as with Ukraine.
Starting is initiating. The war on terror I'd categorize as a forced response.

I agree about 80%: Iraq was a war of aggression. Vietnam was waged on false pretences. The "war on drugs" has screwed up the whole world.
Labelling legally available drugs as "this drug has resulted in the deaths of X million people this year" and/or "this drug causes X% of users to become addicted" might have been a better approach. - 1 y
Don't know what happened above. I have changed to Linux Mint today. Anyway continuing...
The first Iraq war was in response to Hussein launching an invasion and was highly justified. The second was unfortunate. Today weapons of mass distraction is billed as a lie but stems from misinformation that Hussein was injecting into geopolitics to make his neighbors afraid of him.
It might have been naive of the US & UK in particular to believe Saddam's propaganda but he had invaded Kuwait so he had some runs on the board. 49 countries thought so.
With Vietnam again it was one side of a partitioned country invading the other partition. Of any war this has to be the most dubious and ill advised I would certainly agree and the most divisive with the countries that participated. The way the vets were treated was quite appalling.
Still I think that the people making those decisions deserve to be judged on the circumstances of their time without revisionism.
My country participated in all these wars and Vietnam is the only one I think was ill judged but that doesn't go as far as being wrong.

1 yBecause they're a violent war like people who need to justify defense jobs in every congressional district and that means that you need to keep turning over inventory...
Because it's a dystopian capitalist society that offers the deal of your life for an education which becomes the only way out for the crushing poverty for many...
Because it's an arrogant society that has claimed to be the world's policeman for over a century and cops need kit...
Because American voters are dumb as fuck and largely have no clue what's going on outside their narrow parochial survivalist world...
20 Reply 3K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic. USA got rich with two world wars. Argentina as example got rich with first world war due meat export but Argentinian elites were too foolish to keep their wealth. US got rich mostly due Lend lease program for Russia who paid in gold, but England paid in gold too for supplies.
Business model that works will be repeated and human life doesn't really have a value for people who make choices.00 Reply- 7.4K opinions shared on Society & Politics topic.

And the word on the street is that she wants Joe to pardon her. I was talking to my brother, and I said that when someone gets a pardon, they should at least tell us the crime they're being pardoned for. According to Google, a pardon is forgiving a crime. Cool beans. Tell us the crime. Is that too much to ask?

I don't now what happened there. All blue things are blue. It's true by definition. There was an idiot in class who argued with this. Maybe not all blue things are blue. What? If it's not blue, then how is it a blue thing? I think MSC was that guy. @exitseven has a headless cat. So I'm going to say that all headless cats, don't have heads. Gomer would argue with that.

I'm not sure. I don't mean to make light of Sammy not having a head, but it kind of makes me smile. My Pal met Doc Watson in Chicago. My pal said his guitar looks like it's been through a few wars. Doc was blind, and probably the best flat picker to ever grace this Earth. This is finger picking and not flat picking, but Sammy won't notice.

@MarjorieJ It has been quite a few years since Sammy was killed. I still feel a little responsible. We used to leave the cats outdoors during the day when the weather was nice. They loved their little backyard.
I would leave their food and water bowls on the deck under the table in the shade..
One day Sammy went missing and we found him 3 or 4 days later in the woods behind my house.
I always thought that coyotes only came out at night. - 1 y

Seems highly untrue especially if you look at all the evidence, sure we get involved but starting them all is crazy.
