No idea, makes no sense. And to boot... you are not allowed to turn off services to the home (in nyc). Thus, you the owner have to keep paying for someone that has no written contract to live there. Can you imagine in areas where tenants are supposed to pay the water bill... but they don't give a crap... and leave it run all day... the owner would be liable for that water bill.

What unbelievable idiots made these laws?

Any judge or official that upholds them should have professional squatters in their home asap. The only way they fix the laws is by suffering themselves.

Squatters are the illegal immigrants of real estate. It takes a lot to get rid if them, and of course the bloated albatross government is almost never on the side of the homeowner. It's individual eminent domain for hoarders.

note that such squatter laws are in place across the country, but democrat areas take it to another level it seems as they take away rights of ownership and ability to protect (life, liberty, property) under the constitution.

Squatters rights are common law. In most places it requires quite a long time of occupancy & control of the land - 15 years in my country/state to be able to claim ownership.

I researched this a bit for a piece of land but won't go into details here.

Two days is pretty ridiculous. A quick google indicates it is 30 days in NY and this particular case came up that the owner couldn't evict and did not seem to be that she lost title to it but just had tenants she did not want.
