Whether it’s legal or not , who cares , they are defending themselves as well as protecting their loved ones , In my state it’s justified to shoot someone that breaks into your home , I almost shot one of my son’s friends’ that came into my home in the middle of the night , when my son wasn’t even home , luckily I saw the kid and knew who he was , cuz I was about to shoot him , I was pissed off that the kid had the nerve just to walk into my home in the middle of the night assuming my son was home when he wasn’t , I told him don’t ever do that shit again , you’re lucky I saw you, before I put a round in you. He apologized and said he wil never do it again. So yes it’s justified for a family member or friend to use your gun in that situation.

I live in a state with Castle Doctrine laws, and also does not require individuals to be licensed to possess, or fire, a gun, nor do guns need to be registered here.

Under your example, it's likely that they would be free of liability, and basically fine, as far as the law in concerned. However, I am not a lawyer, and my opinion should not be taking as legal advice.

If I were located in a different state, the legal liabilities could be very different.

Pretty much anywhere in the world if your life is in obvious immediate danger you can defend yourself as you see fit with whatever is at hand.

The legal bit is to make sure you kill at the right time with them holding a weapon. If they surrender it or turn an run then thats where things get legally tricky.

that highly depends on what state you live in i mean in germany where i live, that act of them killingg the intruder would be legal in self defense but you'd definitely be heavily punished for having your gun accessible like that cause you and only you are supposed to have access in the first place.
