Why are America and Russia enemies?

Russia used to be a "Superpower". They've got a nuclear arsenal and at the end of the 20th century, that is really the ONLY threat they posed, as they're economy as a whole was never really any bigger than California's.

But the perception due to nuclear weapons was Russia was a superpower. So Russia intimidated thier hemisphere.

Bottom line whenever a countries rises to prominence thier going to make enemies as they bump up against other world powers.

The battle lines were drawn after the fall of the Nazi's in WW2. Russia and the United States were the ONLY countries in a position to fill that vacuum. Just like this is why there is tension between the United States and China. China was our "friend" until they started becoming a threat to us. Now the battle lines are being drawn for this century. And China and Russia have a common enemy in the United States.

Also it doesn't help that culturally speaking Russia and the United States are nothing alike.

Because they both need a perpetual boogyman to justify government action, and especially in the former's case, in active denial of their true and much more dangerous enemy: China.

Historically, an outside enemy is the excuse for a government to distract from internal problems.
