William Golding was very wrong.

For some context, his mother was a woman’s suffragette and feminist. On top of that Golding once tried to grape a woman as a young man.

Later, in WW2, he was in combat and saw a lot of heavy action. Men being killed. Boats being torpedoed and sunk.

Aaaaand he was also a very, very, very, very bad alcoholic.

My point is, his assessment is far, far from objective. The man saw first hand what was worst in man... he was full of self-loathing and trauma from the war and the way he treated women, and—shocker—out of an abundance of guilt and ignorance he thins the alternative world, the world of women in which he didn’t really play a part, is somehow better.

Yes, the women aren’t on the front lines sticking a bayonet in someone’s guts, but that hardly makes them “superior.”

Buuuut if that fictional belief—along with a bottle of booze —helped Golding to sleep at night and live with himself then who cares. 🤷‍♂️
