The Israelites were around before Christianity even started. It was basically the Apostles who started it after the crucifixion as they were emboldened to go out and preach the Gospel to all nations by the Holy Spirit. They later were called Christians as followers of Christ. The Israelites have rejected Jesus as the Messiah, but a lot of them are coming around due to organizations, like Jews for Jesus.
