He was a dictator, and some did want to go back to being a republic, but was assassination the only route?
No matter what they did, a civil war would have started, so in the end, it made no difference. The republic never returned.
Yup, the Republic was lost when Caesar crossed the Rubicon with his army. What other routes could they take though?
they could have tried to arrest him, but he had a lot of support from the army and his own private group of thugs, so civil war either way
He was too powerful to be arrested.
And they did try that. He then came in with his legions.
As protectors of the Republic yes; they just failed to realize the Republic was already irredeemable when the Gracchi Brothers were assassinated and citizenship was offered to all conquered people.
