Can you watch violence?

Hello🥳🥳 im a huge fan of historical Turkish dramas and I’ve noticed that I love them because there not as violent as American movies. For example, if someone is being tortured you don’t actually see it as some American movies ( no American movies anymore for me😭) . I remember a bar fight between 2 guys in American movie and i was about to pass out 🤧 but my question is this: do you consider it as a sign of weakness? Im confused because if everyone was afraid like me there would be oppression but at the same time my heart really stops when I see violence 🥲 any thoughts?

Ps: for example, I really like knights movies but each time I find a good one it’s too gory ( hello kingdom of heaven😩) but with Turkish dramas scenes are perfect : no gore but beautiful swords fights 😵so i don’t get why all this violence in American movies🧐

Easily. I've witnessed violence and death in real life since I was 5. I've seen and been around death so much that it does not phase me to see someone die, no matter how violently, unless I am close to that person.

Even when my grandfather, the man I cared about the most, died, I was the person who arranged everything because the numbness allowed me to keep control of things. It is almost impossible for me to shed a tear at the sight of death.

The fact I can watch violence and it not phase me actually scares me.

oh sorry to hear.. i dont want to play the psychologist but i think when we are used to something traumatizing we tend to become desensitized to protect ourselves (just a personal hypothesis here). Concerning my question, death is not always violent since its a natural thing , i was thinking more about killing or hurting

I'm not into slasher or horror films. I think sword movies are stupid.

But I have to say that my favorite genres are action and action comedy in which they show bad guys getting hurt really, really bad. As long as they deserve it, I love seeing the gore and hearing them screaming in agony.

Yes.
I enjoy horror movies, gore-filled movies with tons of blood, open wounds, injuries, people getting torn up, sliced and horrifically killed off one by one.
My favourite horror is the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The torture, the desperation for freedom, the energy, the fear, it's exciting and incredibly thrilling!

No, it is not a sign of weakness if you cannot handle gore / horror / gruesome imagery. Everyone has their own tolerance, likes and dislikes. Its NOT weak at all if that is something you do not enjoy. :)

well i will never watch a movie with a chainsaw haha thanks for your answer! but what do you find thriling if i can ask? i think i have tendency to put myself in others shoes and thats why i just can't handle it

Not a fan of mindless violence, and that is why if I channel surf across one of the CAGE FIGHTS - I think of the Roman Coliseum and ask myself how hard up you have to be to do that - especially women bloodying each other....

Makes me want to vomit to see two women fight and injure each other mindless violence.

There's nothing wrong with avoiding violence, I think many Americans would agree with the statement that as much as I like my violence, I also envy your perspective too.

I think the answer is multifaceted.

For one thing, watching a sword fight or a combat scene is visually just a beautiful thing to look at. The best definition I know of drama is when anticipation and uncertainty intersect. When you watch something violent, you put yourself there. As you anticipate what's going to happen next, you're at times greeted with something a little different.

Also, when the hero is fighting, the violence adds to the weight of whatever they're fighting for. The stakes are multiplied in a similar way to how a circus might have someone walk a tightrope over a great height.

There's a level of athletic ability being showcased too.

Lastly I think it's a sort of release

i admit I dont put sword fights in the category ''violence'' and now that i think about it it doesn't make sense. I think what i meant by violence is the idea of hitting someone for fun... like torture or gangs up against one person, useless gory scenes... swords fighting is an art for me and i like them because its warrior against warrior... in my mind violence refers mostly to inequal fights and hate. For exemple, a warrior who kills another warrior in a turkish drama isn't traumatising for me because he is protecting himself. In American movies, i saw a lot of useless violence like slowly killing those things i just can't handle... why all this persistence in hurting someone?

a good exemple is military rapes. If im your ennemy just kill me but no, some ''soldiers'' need to rape. thats what i call persistence in hurting someone. American movies are full of free violences scenes. Another exemple : in my historitical turkish dramas there is of course torture since we talk about crusades but you dont see it you just understand that the person get tortured. In American movies, i remember there was a graphic torture scene out of nowhere and the teacher was so mad i didn't want to check it like it was so normal to watch for him... i find this very disturbing that people watch torture without any emotions

I'd have to see the movie. There's certainly people who are messed up and don't feel anything watching that stuff. But sometimes it's important to the story or the development of the character

i can't tell you your going to die if you watch but just know it wasn't necessary at all the character was nobody in the story

I really can't speak on it if I don't specifically know what you're talking about. I'd have to see the movie. But unless it's horror or some kind of comedy, I just don't think I've ever seen that.
