I think this just follows the larger theme of France and the US being kicked out of the Sahel/NATO crumbling etc. All of these former French colonies are sick of being steamrolled. Notice their tactic of blocking avenues of communication so quickly (Tiktok).
I'm sure we will see a process of bullying, bribing or placating play out.
They are sick of suckling the first worlds tit? These territories are mostly a drag on the parent countries economy.
Oh I agree, you're not wrong at all, yet for strategic or other reasons I can only guess at they just can't seem to let go.
@Goahead76. Agreed. If there are strategic reasons than the French should eradicate the problem peeps. Their armed forces are to protect democracy not practice it.
@KrakenAttackin Oh I don't think democracy has anything to do with it, they couldn't give a damn about that. I think it's more of a control/sphere of influence/ prestige thing. They're likely still embarrassed from being thrown out of Africa so rudely.
@Goahead76. Absolutely, democracy doesn't really factor, but the French have to pretend it does. If there is strategic use and or natural resources of importance; get the indig in line (either by buying them off or killing them off, or a combination). Probably the biggest weapon the French have is the threat to cut off the entitlements.
@KrakenAttackin I think you're exactly right.
I think the French should kick them out of being part of France.
What about the French people living there and the nickel mines? I think it would be better to just give independence to the Loyalty Islands and put all the Kanaks who don't want to be part of France there. They've had independence referendums before. One was boycotted by the Kanaks and the other two didn't pass
"Independence" means no guaranteed welfare, subsidies, and other entitlements. These people will quickly come to hate "independence".
@KrakkenAttackin. All the more reason to cut them loose.
