How do you feel about Rishi Sunak ditching the D-Day commemoration?

The most plausible theory I've heard why he wanted to do this is because he didn't want to be seen with european leaders and take part in an international event like this to appeal to isolationist brexiteers. If that's true that was a crazy miscalculation.

The only group that the Tories actually haven't harmed too much economically are old people. So he's shooting himself in the foot by direspecting their generation like this.

But even I as a comparatively young person think D-Day is important. It's one of the most important days in the history of humanity. It might be the last time any of the veterans are able to attend. The U. S. president who has to sacrifice basically 3 days if you include the travel time showed up to this event. The King who has cancer showed up. The leader of the opposition stayed the whole time. The german chancellor showed up and stayed. How did they manage to blow this?

And it's not like attending this event is difficult, they probably had an amazing dinner for the heads of state. He travels in luxury. All he has to do is sit and listen to the proceedings. It's like a day off and he gets paid for this. He's expecting young people to work for free for the government but he can't even do his paid job right. And his team actually considered for him to not show up at all. I don't know what they're smoking XD

I've been to Normandie and went to the bunkers with little exhibits of pictures and other things from WW2. I was maybe 13-14 it was a great experience. I've been interested in history in general and WW2 specifically my whole life it would have been an honor for me to attend this event I would have been happy to be there. I don't get it. It's actually amazing how good they are at being out of touch. If you did an experiment where people were told to act out of touch on purpose, I don't think they could do as well as the Tories are doing who are running an election campaign.

Well people want to feel like the people in charge understand them at least a little bit and have similar priorities. So when the leader of the country does something that most people would never do it's news. He will go away soon.

I'm bad for this stuff. I never do what I'm expected to do, and piss people off. Family gatherings and stuff. If one can draw equivalences of my petty and mundane existence.

But honestly, I hate all this show stuff.

Do I care that he's not attended a d-day celebration, or that he let in 700k net migrants last year? Every year for the past 3 years. That he ruined the country's economy over a bad flu season. That he paid a bunch of fat wasters to sit on their arses for 2 years. That the national debt is now £2.6 trillion. That he's saddled 40k of debt on every person. That house prices are astronomical. That there is no de facto health care service: It's a big pile of shit, not that I would use it unless I absolutely had to anyway. That they pumped 900 billion of quantitative easing into the economy. That British culture is being destroyed and eroded. That we're taught to hate ourselves, to be shameful and guilty for something that was nothing to do with me; and every other culture has been engaged in anyway. That it's a waste of time me working for what I receive in the process. That it seems to 'pay' more to be on benefits than actually working. That every little fart and wank seems to be monitored these days, cause the government knows better. That saying something naughty on twitter and hurting someone's feewings can get you put on jail.

I wish he and the rest of his ilk, all all the political class, would fuck off and people would start taking responsibility for the shit show that is their lives and society at this moment.

@paledreams We've had 14 years of Tories. They're at their lowest ebb. If you're a leftie, you're in good company with Rishi. All that will happen is we have a left-wing party that has ruined the country with their left wing policies, and we'll have a further shift to the left with Labour.

Sadly, we need quite a significant shift to the right.

I still feel like Rishi, i'm Australian, I still think even if the outcome doesn't quite affect me, that Rishi may pull off a surprise victory for the Tories / Conservatives - after all, it's maybe that wisdom in some competitions - one side gets so over-confident, they fall asleep at the wheel 🛞

@paledreams He's not going to win. Too many things have happened. I feel like the Tories are really good at selling themselves and creating distractions and lying to people and all kinds of things but they have 0 substance at least this version of the party. And in the beginning that might be fine when you just come to power and things are still more or less functional. But now it's been 14 years and they have done nothing of substance and the only thing they did do Brexit made everyone's lives worse. So at some point no matter how good you are at talking you need to have some basic goodwill towards your party from things you've accomplished and they don't have that. And now he can't even get the optics right with this huge mistake that didn't have anything to do with policies. So how is he going to win the election?

Those most keen on Brexit have now moved over to Reform taking a large chunk of the Tory vote with them. As Farage says "Sunak doesn't understand our culture" or in other words "we don't want brown people here". Rumour has it he's about to quit and Cameron is taking over.
