Juneteenth is an American holiday celebrated on June 19 to commemorate the emancipation of enslaved people in the US. The holiday was first celebrated in Texas, where on that date in 1865, in the aftermath of the Civil War, enslaved people were declared free under the terms of the 1862 Emancipation Proclamation.
Bittersweet, in the sense that so much ugliness had to happen to arrive at such a day. It’s obviously the most shameful aspect of American history…. but maybe a little silver lining is that we’re capable of making progress and righting wrongs of the past, just moving to “be better” going forward.
The progress seems to move at a snail’s pace compared to other things, which is disheartening, but maybe we can at least say things are trending in the right direction. I guess I just feel like, whatever you think of the state of affairs today, today’s state of affairs should have been realized like a fucking CENTURY ago. Inexcusable that about 100 years passed between “ok, well, you’re not slaves anymore” to get to “sure, you can ride on the same bus as white people, and sit wherever you want.” That’s pretty fucking insane.
And today, we have people in politics who are trying to just pretend the shit didn’t happen, I guess so little white kids don’t feel bad? I mean…. I was a little white kid who was taught about slavery. I “felt bad” in the way I SHOULD, but I didn’t take the weight upon my own shoulders, because I left preschool with all of the basic reasoning skills I should have developed by five years old. I was in a majority black school at the time, for fuck sake, lmao, but you take it in stride and understand that it’s a history lesson, with an emphasis on “LESSON”, so I was like “ok, this is where we came from, here’s where we’re at now…. fill in the middle with other information I’m given, and lo and behold, I can piece together a story of how shit went from then to now, maybe appreciate some struggles others might face that I inherently don’t have to because of the way American society has historically been structured, and just have some fucking empathy for somebody who isn’t me. I legitimately cannot wrap my head around why this is difficult for any adult human to grasp. I don’t walk around apologizing to black folks for the sins of the past, neither of us were there, but we both are subject to a trickle-down effect, because the idea that we just wave a magic wand and sign some document and everything is perfect from then on is just preposterous, so like…. just recognize that. I can’t see the problem. Doesn’t mean I’m an oppressor or black folks are perpetual victims, it’s literally just reading the fucking room we’re all in.
So I mean, it’s Juneteenth, I’m just going about my day as usual, I’m not holding any White Guilt ceremonies or anything, lmao. I just take a beat and think of my fellow Americans who are Black today, and just think about how easy the road was for some of my ancestors (not necessarily here, mine came in the late 1800s and early 1900s after the fact…but I’m not under any illusions that the British and Irish were saintly) versus how difficult the road was for others, and just little tough-to-detect-and-point-out things that are still very real and impact our society and certain groups within it that I’m not experiencing and having to hurdle.
Obviously we all have struggles in life, but some have some additional struggles to overcome that I’ll never have. Doesn’t mean everything sucks and no one can have any hope or anything like that…. like I said, we seem to be trending in the right direction. But there’s just a faction that I hope is louder than they are numerous, who just are too uncomfortable talking about anything that doesn’t champion Western society (specifically America) as the greatest thing to ever occur in the entire history of forever, so they’re trying to snuff out any discussion. These very much seem to be the kind of folks who, if you gave them truth serum, would tell you “America was made BY white people, FOR white people; anyone else better do their best impression of a white American or face ostracization; and we absolutely cannot be doing anything to suggest that we fucked up along the way to becoming an international superpower. We can only talk in a self-congratulatory way about everything America has accomplished. Questioning America’s means and motives of yesterday, today, or tomorrow will NOT be tolerated.”
I can’t imagine being so racist or so unempathetic that I could find fault with a holiday that ANYONE gets off of work, if applicable at their job (no one’s like “white people still have to come in and work”…but maybe that’s actually poetically justified😂), like “why do you hate a free holiday, everything else aside?” I just can’t imagine an honest answer to that that wouldn’t include “…. and I don’t particularly care for black people…”🤦♂️ These are the same folks who rail against “DEI” and are anti-“woke” (their definition of “woke”, not the original correct one, lmao…. these fucking nerds, HONESTLY😂😂😂), and don’t realize that attitudes like theirs are the reason we even have to talk about any of that stuff and make it an issue. In the South, black women nursed our children when they were slaves. They farmed our fields right next to us. There was no segregation until you Yankees got involved.

Sure, they lived in shacks and were given pig intestines to eat, and maybe some of the women were raped, and the men beaten or lynched for petty offenses they may not have really even committed, and a family or two may have been broken up by selling off Dad to another plantation, and yeah, they might have worked in the fields in some of the hottest temperatures America has to offer outside of legitimate deserts BY FORCE and for free…. but other than that…. they were treated pretty well, and there’s definitely nothing that’s objectively completely fucked up about the very concept of any human enslaving another.

What it did was demand the manumission of slaves in Confederate territory, which Lincoln had no authority over. It explicitly didn't do anything for slaves in the Union. The equivalent would be the mayor of Chicago seeing the epidemic of gun violence wracking the city, and making an ordinance banning private gun ownership in Canada. The entire POINT was to shame England and France into refusing to support the Confederate cause, since them throwing in would've cost the Union the war. And it did succeed in that regard; I'll give Lincoln that much.
"Juneteenth" as a holiday celebrates the ratification of the 13th Amendment, which legally ended slavery. Its ascension to a federal holiday was blatant pandering on the part of Joe "If you don't vote for me, you're not black" Biden, as it was long a holiday celebrated primarily in black communities, for obvious reasons. Rather a hypocritical move on the President's part, given his appalling record on criminal justice reform, family law, and welfare issues (he is, overall, more accurately referred to as Joe "who needs evidence?" Biden), which are far larger issues for the average black American (and non-black American, for that matter), but pandering rarely treats its targets as actual human beings.
Don't get me wrong; I'm all for celebrating the end of slavery, but it needs to actually be OVER for that. It's an unpopular stance, but I, for one, refuse to accept it until slavery in this country is ACTUALLY illegal. Now, when you think modern slavery in America, you probably think of this:

Note the lack of "unless it would be politically inconvenient", as well as "unless it's not racially motivated; that would be okay".
Ban military slavery, and I'll accept the holiday- and the benevolence of the government's intentions. I'll still suggest you come up with a less stupid name, though.
I honestly was ashamed that it hadn't been made a federal holiday much, much sooner, although I think that December 6th is a more accurate day, marking the ratification of the 13th Amendment. I suppose it being in the summer is best for celebrating, though, and it falls between Flag Day and Independence day, so it is within the Honor America Days period (21 days). I think it's appropriate.
I think it's become an unnecessarily polarizing issue. The bottom line is that the emancipation of black people is something to be celebrated, period. People died for this cause, and it is fitting that a day that celebrates freedom in America is recognized. Both Trump and Biden approved of it, Biden just happened to be the president that signed it in as a federally recognized day.

That is not accurate. June 19th was not the emancipation proclamation. The emancipation proclamation was signed jan 1 1863
June 19th 1865 is the day the last slave was freed in America.
It is the day that officially marked all Americans who was not prisoners for crimes committed were free.

It's irrelevant and ridiculous outside of Texas, and more specifically the Houston-Galveston region. The rest of the country, if celebrating anything related at all, should be celebrating either January 1st (1863, not 1862), or April 9th (1865, the end of the civil war), or whatever date news of the war's end reached that area. For a national holiday, either the date or Lincoln's speech, the end of the war, or December 6th 1865 (ratification date of the 13th amendment and the actual formal end of slavery in the US) make far more sense.
It’s a Democrat slave traders holiday to celebrate slavery and remind Blacks that they are perpetual victims never to be real Americans. Real Americans celebrate freedom on Independence Day. June 19, 1865 is just a day when 250,000 slaves were granted their freedom in Texas by the U. S. Army. Many slaves were free long before then, but what Democrats won’t tell you and they cherish in their hearts dearly is that there were slaves after Juneteenth. For example in Kentucky legal slavery didn’t official end until Dec. 18, 1865 and today Democrats still traffic humans. Juneteenth is a reminder that while some slaves may escape at times due to overwhelming military strength, slavery still continues in Democrat strongholds.

Its a celebration of bad history. There were still slaves on June 19th 1865 elsewhere in Texas and legally in many other states including Kentucky and Delaware where slavery would remain legal for almost 6 months later until December 6th 1965.
Juneteenth is just a really bad date for a "national" holiday, it only makes sense in Texas.

This is legal dubious, the real official end to slavery was December 18, 1865 when the 13th amendment ended the institution in the states of Kentucky and Delaware, and arguably everywhere else the State goverment had not already acted to do so.

If we're going to celebrate any day, it should be December 6th, but June was picked because they wanted a holiday in June, between Memorial Day (May) and Independence Day (July).
