Juneteenth or Emancipation Day?

For those who don't know, Junteenth is an American federal holiday commemorating the emancipation of African slaves in the U. S.

However, "Junteenth is a dumb name for it. And this is not a criticism of the holiday, just the name. Is sounds like a kindergartener trying to say the date.

"Hey Becky what's the date?"
"I dunno, Juneteenth?"

So the question is: should it stay as Juneteenth or is "Emancipation Day" a better title for it?

No it isn't. The Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863. On June 19, 1865 Union Major-General Gordon Granger read General Order No. 3 to the people of Galveston, Texas two and a half years later. It was a cultural tradition.

Perhaps, but it was and is a harmless Black colloquial expression. It was re-invigorated after the George Floyd death to appease Blacks. So be it. At least it wasn't invented by the CIA like Kwanzaa. I think some date following nearly January 1 might have been created as Emancipation Day.

June 19th was the "effective" date so to speak. Yes there was more to it than that but I chose to simplify it a bit. January 1st, 1863 was still in the middle of the war so one would assume the Confederate states chose to ignore it.

The Emancipation Proclamation did exactly SQUAT, dude- it only freed slaves in CONFEDERATE states, which Lincoln had no authority over. It was a publicity stunt, and nothing but- the literal equivalent of the prime minister of the UK, upset about violent crime, banning pocket knives in the US.

Juneteenth was picked because someone decided that a holiday in June was better than a holiday in September ( there is already Labor Day in September, no holiday in June), to honor the date the Emancipation Proclamation was signed that freed slaves in the US. Juneteenth only freed slaves in Texas. KEEP THE NAME.

I prefer emancipation day, but it doesn't fit as much to me either. I'm no help though I can't think a better name

If you're going to celebrate "Emancipation Day," then it should be on January 1st, or alternatively December 6th since that was when the constitutional amendment was actually ratified.

"Juneteenth" is indeed a stupid name, but "Emancipation day" isn't accurate, and won't be until (at the very least) the SS is abolished.

I don’t know know. I am in Texas where I think that name came from. And it’s a cowboy’s accent of “June 18th” if I’m not mistaken.
