Aside from divine beings, I would say the John Fowles is one of the smartest guys in history. He was an atheist, but the level of depth that he used when judging personality is beyond anything a psychiatrist from the 1900s could ever achieve. Psychiatrists these days, are more mechanical and impersonal than they are practical or intuitive and they focus more on abstraction than symptom expressing socialization and the fostering of strategic behavioural incentives for managing illness.
