WOW! My dad’s British, and I grew up there until I was 6, and I never knew that! But yeah, after WWII Britain was practically bankrupt. It simply could not afford to keep spending money on an empire, when the most of the homeland especially the capital needed rebuilding!

I didn't know but it doesn't surprise me. The British have a long colonial past as well as other Western European nations.
I did not know that, and it's awesome! No hard feelings, right?

The British were busy. I didn’t know.
yup it was once called "the empire on which the sun never sets"
Actually, it was more of a saying, that: “The sun has never set on the British Empire “! Well until the 99 year lease on Hong Kong expired at midnight on 1 July 1997. This event ended 156 years of British rule in the former colony, which began in 1841. With a 1997 population of about 6.5 million, Hong Kong constituted 97 percent of the total population of all British Dependent Territories at the time and was one of the United Kingdom's last significant colonial territories. Its handover marked the end of the British colonial empire, especially in the Asia-Pacific region where it had never recovered from the crushing debt of the Second World War!
