As things stand, the only purpose that a third-party candidate can possibly serve is to swing things one way or the other regarding the outcome between the two leading candidates.

No. USA is a 2 party system, not by edict but because of that is how the system works. Voting 3rd party is so useless you may as well not bother showing up. It is not because I dont want there to be a 3rd choice but because of how badly the election system in USA is actually designed.
