OK here's the (my) answer

TSMC has the ability to make chips that no other company in the world can. The short answer of why is they have developed the technology to fit more transistors on a chip than Samsung or any other company by a lot.

The consequence is that anyone using their chips now has computing power that is completely unavailable without them.

This technology can be used to gain significant advantage in military tech including the production of hypersonic missiles for example

The government didn't pay much mind until China renewed threats to invade Taiwan, the country TSMC is located in. An interesting part of this story is that the creation of this company was largely facilitated by their government with the specific purpose of defending themselves from China by building industry and economy

Lmao TSMC manufactures the vast majority of the world's computer chips. If China gets it's communist Marxist hands on it, it will seriously fuck things up.
