First of all, tariffs can and have been used as leverage to negotiate better trade arrangements and to prevent entire industries from being destroyed, but let's look at the situation with China, which is where the tariffs matter most.
China heavily subsidizes many of its export industries and manipulates its currency favor of its exporters in order to maintain market share and allow its domestic companies to become stronger competitors. When Trump imposed tariffs, China maintained its export prices by doing more of the same, so there wasn't some bout of inflation. It actually cost China more money to maintain market share, and there was increased revenue for the federal government.
You may want to ask yourself why Joe Biden didn't dismantle the tariffs when he entered office when he dismantled virtually all other Trump policies. Tells you something, and it tells us something that you didn't bother to look at actual data, instead providing a dictionary definition.
In all countries tariffs increase consumer prices but they also support jobs. Tariffs are a job subsidy. There are benefits to that. it can be cheaper to subsidize jobs than give social security. if people are busy at work a lot of social ills disappear. Idle hands etc.
The automotive industry has a well known multiplier effect so a lot of countries choose to subsidize.
Since covid at least there is a realization that you shouldn't off shore all of the industry. There is vulnerability to other countries dominating industries and undercutting.
There are a lot more nuances than what is simply represented with higher consumer prices. I think it is naive view

My vehicles were all made in USA along with my lawnmowers, snowblower, hot tub, power washer and roto tiller. All my power tools are as well unfortunately the consumer electronics industry has completely been shipped to China. President Trump is trying to bring it back. Tariffs is a tool to use for that.
