What are our real needs as a society, considering how often we focus on unnecessary wants and superficial goals such as material possessions, social status, and digital validation?

We should provide the basic needs for everyone then if people want more out of life they can pursue that themselves. Some people may need a bit extra to start out with (like say those with permanent disabilities for example) but we should all be allowed to have a fair shot at being successful in life and if we fail there should be safety nets in place to prevent homelessness. It's a dream but its worth fighting for darn it!

Clearly there are many, many people wanting wealth, status and possessions. They want it and they need it, from their standpoint.

To secure the same we are programed to seek socialization with others in cooperation to some limited extent. But those are really only needs to the extent they are the only way to get the above 3 requirements of life.
