Borders can never be airtight, no matter how much ressources a country pours into sealing it. If people really want or need to cross it, they will cross it. Of course, building an ultra-militarized border will reduce crossing attempts a bit but it will also cost a shitload of taxpayer money to build and to maintain... and it will never be 100% airtight. It will also tarnish the already waning image of the US, worldwide, which despite what right-wingers like to believe, is the enduring legacy of post-Nixon republicanism.

To a reasonable person, the long-term, most effective solution to illegal immigration is to work hard, striving for actual results, to reduce poverty and inequalities worldwide, while, concurrently, helping nations who are willing to work actively in order to improve their standard of living. In other words, stop hoarding the world's wealth and ressources and find solutions to make "shithole countries" less shitty.

But that's rainbow pie-in-the-sky communism, probably. Everything is communism when it's not more guns and more law enforcement.

Speaking of communism, just look at the Berlin wall and the German inner border. A republican's wet dream: dog runs, anti-vehicle ditches, mine fields, 4 meter-high concrete walls and electrified fences with alarms (Berlin wall), good lighting all along, anti-tank obstacles, wire fences on both sides of the strip, helicopter surveillance, guard towers with soldiers armed with assault rifles authorized to use deadly force whenever there is an attempt.

It was intentionally designed to kill anyone who would attempt to cross it.

Did it reduce the number of crossing attempts? Yes. But people still tried anyway and many succeeded if they were smart about it... and it came at a non-negligeable price, both financially and politically speaking.

Did it put a stop to clandestine attempts at crossing the border? No. Despite those deadly and impressive fortifications, people still found multiple ways to cross over.

Does the gulf of Mexico, which is in itself a potentially deadly obstacle, prevent cuban refugees from landing all along Florida's coast? No. Does the Mediterrean sea and its raging storms prevent illegal immigrants from reaching european countries? No.

Well most right wingers that feel that way are irrational and don't really know how to critically think. I don't think all republicans are like this but I'm talking about the extreme maga types. Also, big Poppa Trump doesn't want it solved unless he gets credit. They proved it by shutting down the bi-partisan bill the Biden Harris administration put forth because Trump told them to. He took credit for preventing it being fixed which means he doesn't care if it's fixed unless he becomes president.

Even under President Trump there were still illegal aliens getting through. While Biden was president there were tens of thousands of illegals flowing into the country. When Trump was president most months had encounters in the hundreds. It is more an issue of quantity
