Why do educated people think or believe they know more than you?

Like they will “I went to school for etc etc etc.” “I studied etc etc etc.” and they only ever say it when you give out a piece of information and instead of even considering what you said they completely debunk it because of their studies.

Isn't that the whole point of education? To know more than you did? When people have a chip on their shoulder because they couldn't endure education but find out too late that they want to be treated as knowledgeable anyway, it can be inconvenient to tip toe around their insecurities. So sometimes people stomp.

On the other hand, a degree doesn't necissarily mean someone actually understands anything - it only means they once knew how to pass the test and had the discipline to do the homework. That makes knowledge more likely but by no stretch does it guarantee understanding. Knowledge provides context and boundaries to understanding but understanding provides a pattern to knowledge. Teaching understanding is more the realm of entertainment and it has become extremely easy to create entertainment.

So, we have lots of people with high understanding but low knowledge trying to cover their insecurites by picking fights with those who have high knowledge and unspecified understanding. This often leads to the low knowledge people insisting certian things are true that are either made up or exaggerated and the high knowledge people know enough to know they don't know whether or not that is true. So they go on the attack.

Some people believe that having a college degree automatically means they are smart. Some of the most stupidest people I know have college degrees. A college degree used to mean that a person could at least write in complete sentences, knew how to do basic math and could understand enough about physics and biology to form opinions about the world around them. That is not true anymore. Colleges are more interested in student retention and graduation rate than they are standards.

i mean, they will if the person they're talking to didn't finish school from that viewpoint. if from their studies they actually know you're wrong, then it's more a you problem for not taking criticism/correction

They probably do. That's why I warn people who try to argue history with me that I'm operating on the level of someone with a degree in history. So, unless you actually know the historical topic you're discussing, you're at a disadvantage.
For example: I can actually point to something good about Hitler's control of Germany (maybe a few, but I need to check something first). Most people can't.

Absolutely! I find the more I know, the more I know how much I don't know. But one thing I do know, is that I know how to research things, generally ferret out the true from the false, and glean some level of understanding from those efforts. Even then, I am always open to the possibility that I may be wrong...
