Americans, how is the political center in the US?

I always hear about republicans vs democrats, right vs left..

I don't see a voice of the center, and of course they don't have a party of their own.

How do centrists fare in the political spectrum there? What do they do if they have some leftist opinions and right opinions as well?

I'm an independent. I want to vote for moderates. When I can't find them, I vote for those who are the least extreme.
I didn't take a poll so I don't have numbers, but most people don't spout Democrat or Republican rhetoric nor do their comments indicate either party. Also I'm not aware of any basing their vote on a single issue. I can't say many, but there are a lot a people like me, totally unaffiliated in the political center.

The US is not the center on any issue. Society is divided into two on every issue and both poles are going to extremes. What can I say?
