Most rich people are self made. Mark Zuckerberg founded FB from his dorm room. Jeff Bezos founded Amazon in his garage.

They might of been lucky to be in the right place at the right time. But they also made sacrifices and had a focus that most people aren’t willing to make. We all know about their successes but most people have no idea just how hard they worked in the beginning to get there.

I would of been a self made millionaire right now if I didn’t succumb to a compulsive gambling addiction a few years ago. I do run a lot of side ventures and made sacrifices (working nights and weekends) to develop those income streams.

But I made a mistake a few years ago and I completely own up to it. I’ve been clean from gambling for 3 years now. It’s been very painful but I am not pointing the finger at anyone or anything besides what happened. Things are getting slowly but surely much better. I started a new side gig about 2 years ago and now it’s paying off.

Anyway I really hate all the socialists out there who want to take the easy way out and blame other people for their problems. They also don’t understand (at best) what they are asking for. Communism has been tried in history before with horrifying results.

Millionaires are no longer the gate for "rich" people. The millionaire next door (which I've read) was published in 1996 and was based on surveys even older than that. A million today and a million back then are vastly different sums. You can easily be a millionaire in NYC or La and be entirely unable to retire.

Ramsey is basing his entire article on one study but still the premise is that a million dollars is rich. Currently they approximate 43% of the world's wealth is in the 1%. That money will not be recirculating too quickly through average Joe's coming up.

TBH this is a ridiculous question. I think 99% of the answers would be yes I like to have more money or toys. I think when they say money can't buy happiness they're wrong because money by choices and choices bring happiness

Nope. I cannot relate with the feeling of envy. As I can logically understand it is something like wanting what someone else has, but I cannot feel that.

It's all relative. Some people consider me rich. I don't consider myself rich. And I know people who have their own planes/yachts. There's always people with more money regardless of what you have till you get to Elon Musk levels. And then ask yourself why he prefers to live in tiny regular Joe houses. Same with Kayne.

I don't envy them, but I am acutely aware that they live in a totally different world from my own. As long as their world isn't accessible to me, why would I bother envying them? It's unproductive.

I think that everyone kind of understands that how hard you work makes such little difference compared to knowing the right people in life, but I don't think most people understand just how big that difference really is. It's BIG. It's so big that the difference of knowing the right people is SOLELY what defines rich people's reality.

And it's not like these rich people aren't also hard working, and incredibly talented people; many of them have displayed a great deal of merit to attain the things they have... They just also happen to have the right friends to make their projects happen.

Some things do. But Jeff Bezos' success, for example, is about far more than "knowing the right people." And to the extent he did find the right people, he did it in a way that any similarly talented and motivated individual in this country could have done it.

Now, there are a lot of centimillionaires and billionaires that are not great people, and maybe people cynically wish they can have that much power and wealth, but that is more resentment than envy I think.

Not really. Because for one thing by most metrics I'm considered rich now. But I don't feel very rich. I still have problems just like anyone else. And when I look at the truly wealthy, the super rich like Elon, Bezos, Ellison. These guys spent their entire youth building that. Ask any person with means and they tell you that TIME is the most precious resource. You can always make more money. But no amount of money will buy you a second of time.
