Having expectations or deadlines for society are good things. Sets measurable stats. Obviously these old milestones could still be pertinent, but perhaps reordered.

Aside from decent life conditions, I see this question as entirely personal, instead of societal.
Related to how we define our lives and/or how they are defined for us. Starting from teenage hood, I had this sentiment that career, home property, marriage and kids were not going to satisfy me, that these were artificial milestones being thrown at my face from an external force.
Looking back up to now, I didn't follow any path to career indeed, I did marry without any desire to do it really, I still don't see the appeal of owning a house. And... I had a kid early on, I love her but I don't see her as a personal fulfilment. All in all, I still don't have milestones to look at. My satisfaction comes from somewhere else :)
Let's say there is this person who really loves their family, they want to stay with them, they are from India or whatever and provide for them. They don't have a lot of luck getting a mate and they don't own a home.
Are they a child? Are they not allowed to drink? Are they not allowed to go into the military? Are they not allowed to get tattoos?
These snobbish social standards can go straight to hell.
The milestones are fine. We just need to fix the fucking economy so they're realistic again.
Honestly, making it to 45 debt free is a milestone in itself.

A lot of people today have extended adolescences. They graduate from college and put off getting married or even buying a house. They would rather go skiing or follow their favorite NFL team across the country. By the time they are 40 maybe they are ready.
Congrats on being a generation of losers.
