If people were eating pets in Springfield, there WOULD be evidence. People who made the claims would be willing to testify, they wouldn't change their mind a few days later & say "sorry I found my pet after all oops!" They would be posting ACTUAL photos bc there's no way people could be stealing pets all the time & not get caught. There would be legit accusations against specific people for specific pets (pets that are ACTUALLY missing & whose remains could ACTUALLY be found associated with the accused).
It's only a cover up if something actually happened, like when Trump lied about sleeping with a pornstar while his wife was pregnant bc he knew that would look bad & cost him votes in the election. There was EVIDENCE for that, despite very powerful people wanting & at first succeeding in trying to cover it up. Same here, there would be credible, named, non-recanted claims if this was actually happening.
