Do you have ancestors from another country?

I see people in the US sometimes refer to their ancestors, be it from Sweden, Italy, France… it seems like there’s a lot of international influence, which is normal due to the immigration in the early stages since roughly the year 1600, although there have been many more immigration ‘waves’ in subsequent centuries.

Can part of your family be traced back to a European / Asian / South American country? Does that part of your history make you proud or is it something you’ve always had to struggle with? I can imagine that if you have a recent Italian background, for instance, people may think of you as ‘the Italian girl’, whereas on a visit to the home country of your parents or grandparents, they may see you as ‘the American girl’. You kind of fit in in two different cultures, but not completely.

My background is Mexican. I mean, I've always been clear about my identity... I consider myself Mexican American, more American than Mexican since obviously I was born and have lived my whole life here, but I am proud of my roots and grew up in a Mexican household. There have been a few times where I felt out of place and not fully accepted (mostly from Mexicans since they make sure you know they're real Mexicans and you're not) but I don't think I have to answer to anyone and no one else's opinion about it really matters. I know who I am because that's how I was raised and I wouldn't change anymore about it nor hide it.

I'm all Irish, except for being 1/8th Hungarian and 1/8th Native American (Blackfoot)

Interesting. Irish people tend to hold onto their cultural heritage. I worked for an Irish owned company for years.

I've always been interested in the Native American culture. How much do you know about that side of your ancestors?

I'm 5th generation U. S. citizen but both my paternal and maternal ancestors were Irish Catholic. My paternal ancestors immigrated here in 1850 and my maternal ancestors immigrated around the same time. They all settled in the mid-west - Wisconsin and Iowa, respectively - although they never met until my parents met in the 1950s.

I think all of that is a result of immigration to Ireland over the centuries, unless some of it came from my paternal grandmother and/or great grandmother's family heritages because I don't have a full genealogy on their ancestors.

I am proud of my heritage and have a strong affinity to Irish/Gaelic. I love Irish history and Celtic art. I have visited the Irish Republic twice and love it.

But I'm a California guy through and through. :D

Well I'm Australian but not an Aborigine so of course have European ancestors. You aren't fitting between two cultures but instead quite different to the culture. I have English, Irish, Scottish and German ancestors so it is not as if I am between 4 cultures and my Australian culture. Greeks seem to hold onto Greek culture quite strongly and of course Jewish people.

Unfortunatly, yes.
But i barley even count them, considering i don't talk the language, don't have that nationality and the country i'm born is had alwase been in conflict with the other, olso i never grow there so i had not been influenced by that environment.

I'm 4th generation on both sides and I am 25% Irish, 25% English & 50% Italian & Catholic. I married the mixed Slavic, Russian, Ukrainian, Armenian, Georgian & some other stuff Ashkenazi Jew.

Our kids have said what are we and we just simply answer "Mutts"! 🤷🏽‍♂️😁

All of my ancestors are traced back to other countries. I'm a mix of 3rd and 4th generation from Ukraine, Belarus, Hungary, Scotland and England. I consider them all to be part of my heritage but not my nationality.
