Can you explain the NPC theory?

In video games there are characters around the in game worlds that are just there or programmed to do certain things in a loop. Nobody plays them (non playable character = NPC). So the theory is that a big portion of people in the real world are such characters. That life is a simulation or some sort of subjective experience/dream and a big portion of people out in the world spawn there and are just programmed to do whatever they’re doing and don’t think for themselves and have no free will, but are just empty shells to make the world seem more alive and make your experience here have another layer to it.
