It's the matter of autonomy. The more tools you have the more things you can do with those those tools. Money is as much as a tool as a car, shelter, gardening, stove, even just free time.

Could also connect with Marx alienation of labor. Ultimately we are disconnected from who we are to the labor we produce and the rewards we get. You are putting 2 and 2 together and getting 5 and society blames you for getting the wrong answer and not question the methodology of our society.
