I was just in an argument where someone accused me of playing the victim, said that I’m the one making decisions. Think about it: if you had an employee who botched a crucial contract, your company would be at risk because of that. Wouldn’t that be an example of ruining somebody?

Yes. But if that person did that to too many people then that's just going to make that person who did the ruining look bad after a while. So while it's definitely possible, there is price to be paid for doing such a thing.
