Why is a Netflix' show a topic in French politics?

French President Emmanuel Macron has a message for Netflix: “Emily in Paris” belongs in Paris.

“We will fight hard. And we will ask them to remain in Paris!” Macron told Variety in an interview published Wednesday. “‘Emily in Paris’ in Rome doesn’t make sense.”

The latest season of the streaming giant’s hit show ends with the titular character, American expat Emily Cooper, ditching the City of Light for Rome.

It's a bit of an old news, but still, I find it interesting.

They want impressionable young females who watch the show to want to come to Paris as tourists rather than say Rome. It's worth a lot of money to have a hit tv shows in your city. Northern Ireland did well on tourism from the game of throne franchise, plus renting out hotels and b&bs for the cast & crew. They also want future projects and to to develop Paris as a place where American production companies come to make films. Rome has some of the largest studio sets in Europe, the series Rome was set there though HBO never returned because the Italians were fleecing them with corruption.
