Why do people take on so much debt to get a nice car?

a status symbol, low self-esteem, and they are not the smartest person on the planet.
But as a wise person once told me, anyone can make car payments.
I drove a lot of beaters in my day, 1 pickup the door (s) would fly open, the battery would rub on the cover and get hot, small fires, no big deal, 1 car only had 1 front seat, kind of odd using it on a date, but it was a great place to put the beer, another one the gas line fell down so I taped it to the side of the car. But they ran were dependable and at least I know the person that I was with liked me for me, not what I had.
now I can afford what I want, but I still have a couple old classics that bring back some memories, but are in much better condition than some of my earlier rides.

So if you want to get a new (ish) car most average people need to finance it with loans and stuff.

It is more about the monthly payment being affordable than it is about the total cost for most people. Cars are very overpriced but also necessary since the US generally has very poor or no public transit.
