I like your stories about Cece, because my best friend was Sandy. I had no idea she had cancer. I knew something was wrong, but I didn't know what it was. Her last day on Earth was sailing with me. It gets cold on the ocean, so I swung by a garage sale and bought her a child-sized hoodie. She loved it. I had her zipped up tight. Fried chicken and the ocean air worked for us.


We bought a Geary 18 for 600 bucks. Dang! That thing was fast. So the Seattle yacht club wanted to boost membership. They knew that most of us couldn't afford a yacht. So they commissioned a naval architect (Geary) to design a boat. Notice the name on the boat I showed you? You might not know what a "Whippet" is, but Cece knows. A Whippet is the fastest dog on the planet. They put greyhounds to shame.

My yacht had a main sail, a jib and a Spinnaker. I don't want to sound like a dog racist, but in the sailing world, dogs aren't much help. They only want to help when the chicken comes out.

We won a few races, but it was always with the main. One person can only handle one sail. If Muffin could have handled the jib, and Sandy handled the Spinnaker, we could have won them all. Those lazy mutts.

Cece is very, very fast. She's like a rocket. I think I've heard of those dogs. Cece is built in the way Greyhounds and Cheetahs are. Long legs, deep chest, and small hips.

I don't get the upside down part, but when you're sailing, you are fighting the wind. She is being a counter-balance so the boat doesn't tip over. It's optimal to have the wind at your back, but it's not practical. You have to "tack" into the wind. A Hawaiian dude explained it to me, in a very simple way that I could understand. You pinch a watermelon seed between your thumb and forefinger. The seed can't go in either direction, so it splits the difference and escapes at an angle. That is how you can sail into the wind. You defy the wind with the positioning of your sail and your rudder. The wind will let you compromise and split the difference.

Tacking takes forever, and once night falls, Cece will look at you and wonder what's taking so long. She just wants to get back on the couch and watch another Arnold movie.

At that moment, all Cece needs from you is to see your poker face. You are scared shitless, but Cece doesn't need to know that. How hard can it be to tack in the dark? :)

If you get a chance, read his book. He gets up at 6 am, and goes to bed at midnight. He makes deals all day long. He moved into Trump Towers, because he thought the limo ride to work was a waste of time. Biden just sleeps on the beach.
