Do you think governments will ever start doing something about the housing crisis all over the world?

Question

Like for instance reducing the access investors and landlords have to buy properties. Reducing the influence of people who want to prevent construction in the area where they have a house. Things like that. It seems like governments they are aware of problems like sinking birthrate, more people just giving up on finding jobs all together people just being disillusioned etc. And they point out how this negatively affects the government but when it means upsetting someone with money or influence they still don't want to do anything about it.

Do you think governments will ever start doing something about the housing crisis all over the world?

You can either make a country by the rich for the rich but then you can't complain about how people are not trying hard enough and not contributing enough. Or you can adress problems that affect like 90% of the population.

Do you think there is a solution at all? Or do you think we're just screwed now?

They have been trying, somewhat. They should. But this is like the game where you pull a pixy stick... and try not to bring the whole house of cards down. Here's the problem.

Government does not want deflation... decline in prices... because it is hard to manage. It's hard to manage because as prices drop people delay making decisions because they figure prices will keep going down. Recession/Depression...

They should kick investors out of single family homes. that would deflate prices. Side effects... who knows...

Govt around me has been trying to change zoning standards and build more houses. They aren't talkinga bout expanding roads to accomodate, and people don't want more density of homes. So there is conflict. It's democrats pushing this...

The price of building stuff is driven by govt policy, currency and such.

Trump is making some changes which includes... throwing people out of the country. That will free up space. I'm not saying that is good, but should bring some prices down.

Deflatinug prices by competition... if he can pull that off which is a doubtful... would help. I don't see deflation, I see inflation with his policies.

Landlords... I am one. you know what it costs to maintain stuff now? it's "insane"... including cars. You want to kick me out of the business... ok by me. You go do it.

Best thing you can do is jump into it, and build some houses, aprtments, redo some buildings into condos. you don't need the govt, you need you need you to take action.

the govt is the one that has been screwing this up for a long time... intentionally. housing is a huge part of the economy.

Around here they need to clamp down on second home owners who are snapping up properties for holiday lets. We need to be less reliant on private landlords who are charging extortionate rents. We need more housing for single people instead of just building 6 bedroom houses. Bring in more reliable public transport so people can widen the area their willing to live in and know they can still get to work.

To put in perspective, England spent £100 million on a tunnel for bats to live in. How many people could you house with that?

No I don't think it will happen. Cos a lot of politicians and government people ARE landlords so they benefit by keeping it the way it is. I think, here in UK, they should build UP to create more housing without taking up too much land. It's important to have some green spaces. And I think landlords should be capped on how much rent they can charge.

But it's never gonna happen...

No I think we've got enough problems here to focus on. Aside from that I think there will be more serious problems than shelter in some places. People have used the term "peak oil" for years when worried about the inability to find any more fossil fuels. My concern is peak water. Potable water is already scarce in many third world countries. Those same countries are the ones with the highest birthrate in the past decade. In addition, medical technology has advanced in some of those same countries. Birth rate may have had something to do with mortality rates of infants and in general. So now there are countries with not sufficient potable water already that are going to need more and more. There are homeowners that maintain a green lawn in areas where the natural water supply is too small to support that and that is going to be untenable in a decade or so. As a financial planner I've pushed water purification companies for sometime. In the long tem technology will need to focus on water treatment and desalinization to have enough water for people to drink and forget about big lawns

Old starter-worthy homes are being torn down to make ridiculous million-dollar McMansions normal people cannot afford - certainly not as a starter home.

HOWEVER, there is a different solution, so to speak: Move and/or get an on-line job so you can live anywhere. In many red rural states, towns are dying because the young people are moving out. If young people who need cheaper homes are willing to move, move there. With an on-line work-from-home job, it's definitely a way to make money. Some states, like Vermont, will pay you to move there.

Nice projection... You are the problem. Do you want the government to get rid of you? You can't find affordable housing in a specific geography, so rather than migrating to a new location with more affordable housing you bitch and moan about prices being high and stay in your current location. As a result you demand rental property in your current geographic region. Being that you have created a market by demanding rental property, investors will purchase property in the area to service the demand that you yourself have created. If you were not demanding rental property, then land lords would not invest their money on property in the area. When the market is bloated with vacant investment properties, land lords liquidate and reinvest in new markets were there is demand for rental property.

Over the next parliament, 5 years, the government wants to build 1.5 million homes (and will fail even at that). The population has been added to by almost 10 million in the last 20 years. And the government will simply build on what vestige of peace and sanity exists in this country, the countryside.

The way to reduce housing costs is to liberate the economy from draconian leftist government regulations and taxes creating incentives for builders to build more housing and make more profits not less. Not to try to have an incompetent government make decisions about markets that should be left to market participants.
