For those of you that have used silencers on a gun, does it significantly reduce the sound?

I've heard it reduces it by roughly 50%. Which to me, really wouldn't be that noticable. For example, if I shot someone in my home, close neighbors would still clearly hear the shot. Do you agree?

Silencers are mostly to reduce the noise from a level where they injure your hearing to one where you perhaps do not need hearing protection. That said, there are silencers that actually make the gun very quiet but now we start to need a custom gun and ammunition. Even if you have a fantastic silencer and the gun itself is built to contain the sound, the bullet will be traveling super sonic speeds which is very loud.

That means to have a truly silent gun you need to have a really good silencer, a gun that contains the sound itself and ammunition that is sub-sonic so it does not break the sound barrier.

Some of these weapons have been developed by countries like USA and Russia but they are not super useful in practice due to its limitations. That said, under the right circumstances and from a bit of distance you would not be able to hear one of these highly specialized guns unless the bullet literally whizzed past you.

Really depends on the ammo and gun. Like subsonic or lower then sound barrier. Its in a weird zone where sound could be silent. the gun isn't reliablely killing unless foot away at vitals. So plan assassination uses only.

No, it isn't like in the movies. Some barrels and ammo cannot be silenced much, others can.

Significantly yes. But for really silent shots you would need subsonic ammunition.

Might as well get a compound bow at that point.
