Probably subsonic ammo, you should at least be getting a crack when the sound barrier is broken. Besides the sound, is the recoil noticeably lower than the last ammo you loaded it with?
Some ammo can go bad as well, most ammo is dual propellant, so it's nitrocellulose and TNT which stabilize each other and can be stored for decades. Nitrocellulose can be used on its own, but it breaks down much quicker, also it has residual water from the manufacturing process. Most times I've had ammo go bad it isn't just low velocity though, hang fires are common. You pull the trigger and nothing happens then BANG. It happened when I was hunting once and just scared the crap out of me and the deer lol

I depends in what its chambered 9×19mm Parabellum, .40 S&W, .357 SIG, or.22 Long Rifle, If its the first or last your ammunition could be subsonic (check the box) which would give a reduced report especially the .22 Long Rifle which is fairly quiet to start with.

If its reloaded ammo they could not have enough powder behind it. 99% of the time that is caused by ammo issue. Try a different lot (new box) or different brand. Some brands suck and some work great in certain weapons. If it's a off the shelf box, get a new box.
If it continues, Google what ammo works best for the pistol. Can’t tell, never fired a gun before, does it have a silencer? Like assassins in films I mean..
Sounds like the ammo you are using, maybe ask at the gun shop, yes i am UK but used to shoot pistol before they were banned,,,
yes, may not be using as hot a load as before.
Maybe it’s old ammo and isn’t as good anymore
