There are two meanings of corn in English. In proper English corn was wheat but American usage of corn for sweetcorn or maize has well and truly won on what corn means.

Egypt was associated with wheat from very ancient times. So I am wondering if the usage of Egypt for corn as in wheat occurred first than shifted to sweetcorn/maize or if Egypt was always used for corn as in sweetcorn/maize?

Early Anatolian farmers grew wheat earlier than Egypt I think from memory. So corn as in wheat would be surprising from that angle.
