The end of Idiocracy?

In the movie, the main protagonist makes a decision that saves the agriculture and farmland so that the country can grow actual food again.

This decision IMMEDIATELY TANKS THE ECONOMY and runs the biggest corporation (that everyone depends on for work and food) TO BANKRUPTCY. Everyone is outraged. However this is framed as a THE RIGHT DECISION for the character to make.

It's funny someone asked a question the other day about Luigi Mangione. And the overwhelming response was not in support of the United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson. And to a degree ot IS understandable why many feel this way. But I think what a lot of people forget at times is there's cause and effect to EVERYTHING we do as a society. Yes, nobody loves the Healthcare industry. But it DOES make up 17% of the United States economy. It employs A LOT of people.

I guess what I'm saying is what you said. It the short term it was detrimental. But in the long term it was better for EVERYONE.

And sometimes in life you have to deal with a little short term pain for long term benefit.

For that world to exist it had to be soo automated by AI as to permit humans to be such morons.

Sadly we are headed in that direction with our currently 'learned' cultural values demonstrating by intelligence is soo unusual among life in killing off the people foolish enough to learn it.

Sorry can you explain what you mean? Ai wasn't in the movie that I recall, and I'm nor sure what you mean by the last sentence..

Did you notice how their machines like the medical devices in the movie did everything, AI is very much in that movie. Even thou it was dressed up to look like child's play.

As for the last line Its becoming rather clear that Nero-networks such as the ones most life has and we are creating with our LLM models can somewhat easily become rather intelligent.

So why didn't intelligent evolve sooner? The answer is intelligence and the ability to learn to control your behavior is a double edged sword it is as capable of letting you adapt to a quick changing environment and improve as it is learn unhelpful things killing off you specie.

For most of earth's history the planet was warm and stable, so the ability to adapt to a changing environment was not nearly soo valuable as the risk of learning something harmful. Hence why intelligence didn't really take off until the ice age 2 million years ago begin destabilizing the environment and creating niches were our intelligence gave us an offsetting advantage.

But again the same problem exist, we have to be careful what ideas we "learn" are based upon reality and get results that actually help us as a group and a species. Not killing us off such as the 'unnecessary' can do 'later' attitude towards children being taught by those best inclined to learn.

I think I understand what you're talking about now, but now am confused what kind of learning could be harmful? Adaptability has always been an advantage, both individually & as a species. If u learn something wrong like u make a bad assumption & pass that down the generations, that could be bad yeah. But that's not rlly learning that's not bc of intelligence or adaptability, that's just making a wrong guess that takes a while to have bad effect. Being dumber would not help with that problem it would more likely just make it worse.

Of course those machines were build by their ancestors and similar such machines were running all their business and economy. The medial machine was some kind of AI almost certainly a machine learning algorithm given it was dealing with biological systems it needs to adapt to.

Learning is not the process of acquiring information but using that information to build a model of the world.
Said model must be based upon reality to be useful rather than harmful and therefore constantly subject to testing and revision when the real world results do not line up with the predictions of the model.
If your not doing that honestly you will eventually be learning an incorrect model which of course will drive undesirable behavior.

What makes you think it was ai? There was no suggestion of ai in the movie..

What do you mean about based on reality? How could a model not be based on reality if it is just made up of information you've acquired from reality?

The way it was able to scan and Analise a biological orgasm's biology and make almost emotional judgements. Means it was clearly a form of artificial intelligence.

The movie was about how our 'intelligence' was being used to 'learn' a non-working life 'strategy'/'values' and doesn't explain on most of the technology worked, as clearly the idiots too dump to learn the same failed 'strategy'/'values' didn't know themselfs.

Science is about trial and Error to find equations that define and predict how the world works.
Engineering is about taking those theories also known as models and using them to build systems that do what we want them to do.

Science does this by collecting information and attempting to formulate model's that can recreate the outcome using some of the information. But that model/theory is only regarded as true if it can work for all cases, otherwise it is either missing information or incorrectly applying the information.

As such you might observe that A+B =C When the reality was A*B=C, but you thought it was A+B=C because you only tested it with A and B both being 2, and being 4.

because when A was 4 and B was 2 C was actually 8 you know the correct model is not A+B=C. Instead the right theory was A*B=C.

In this simple example I gave you a theory/model that works in one case and can easily be shown to not describe the relationship. But in many other much more complicated relationships that isn't so easy.

For example:

Newton Physics gives answers close enough that within human scales its more or less right.
but due to other factors not known about in Newton's time its wrong at microscopic or solar system scales. Hence why we had to invent relativity and Quantum physics to handle the larger and smaller scales respectively. But also indicating as Occam's razor suggest that both are also wrong.

It's a major plot point? That's why they try to kill him before the plants even start to grow, because everyone lost their jobs and the big corporation went bankrupt. Maybe I'm thinking of a different movie but I thought that was the same one..

The crops weren't growing, because they were watering them with Gatorade. Luke Wilson and the hooker were put in time capsules, and emerged 500 years into the future. Cece will laugh.

Luke got thrown into prison because he couldn't pay his 2 billion doctor visit. Luke had to take a prison aptitude test, so they could better find a suitable prison job for him. They determined that he was the smartest person in the world, so they let him out of prison.

Yeah I remember that. Then as president he convinces them to use water instead of gateroade, and this makes the big Gatorade corporation bankrupt and tanks the economy, and many people are angry because they lose their jobs. That's why he's sent to be executed in the monster truck arena. Right?

Maybe I'm wrong that's what I remember happening in the movie though. I thought it was interesting because it seemed to say that it was good for him to fix the plants the food problem, before trying to fix the economy and even at the expense of the economy at first. What do you think?

MarjorieJ, I flipped off a sofa trying to get something out of my garage. The board I grabbed to catch myself snapped and I fell on a lawnmower and wheelbarrow. I cracked a rib in the fall.
