The trend is in that direction because our masters have designed schools and colleges to teach students how to do their job without asking questions outside the boundaries established by our masters or to have independent thoughts. That is, just follow the codes, follow the laws, and obey the rules.

I watched the movie on your implied recommendation. My first reaction was that it is a genre that I hate and I nearly turned it off, but stuck it out for a bit and actually it was quite good. Thank you.

The main thing the movie gets wrong is the speed of change. The gene pool changes incredibly slowly in most circumstances. But the dynamic is accurately diagnosed.

Quite possibly AI will make human intelligence irrelevant in my lifetime. In some scenarios, humans will become irrelevant. So nothing to worry about really. 😊

Eh it can a bit, mass advertisements, constant trends and advertising, material gain over real growth and pursuit of intellect in a lot of the west. i realised it really does feel that way when im not taking care of myself nutritionally, some people don't like being told things that make them think outside of the now and usually shut it down because of their own standards of life - some boomers do this.

There is always some conflict, war or genocide happening somewhere in the world. The grace in the past was being able to flee somewhere safer.

Now, with all the "anti-immigration" rhetoric, and globalism - even that grace is gone.

The world is becoming more and more unsafe, and unstable people do crazier things.

No I'd say it's becoming more like the future portrayed in Demolition Man which if you have not watched it is an excellent movie and I wholly recommend it.

But there are also instances I see that could be compared to Idiocracy as well but to me it's still leaning more towards Demolition Man.

No, if anything it's the opposite. Human IQ has been improving from generation to generation. Which only makes me wonder if people are dumb now, how scary it would've been 1000 years ago.

@AngryCarl2 It's not a linear progression that goes up in constant so pretty sure that's just how it works, so it really does not have much to what we are currently doing.
Evolution as we know flux's are more due to a overarching timeline to reach a goal than something so current.
So in the past many times it would've dipped, stalled for not really any obvious reason. If this wasn't the case our IQ right now would be certainly much higher.

I think I know what you're trying to get at but it don't make sense, because let's say you were pointing to phones or something as in modern tech is distracting us from learning and effecting our natural evolution.
This could be true however it would need way more time, this tech hasn't been here for that long compared to ya know the entire history of humans and our evolution working in accordance with that.

The improvement is due to near-universal education and improvements in nutrition and healthcare. Evolution has been going in the wrong direction for some time.

@zagor No... obviously it's being improving from the very start. Otherwise we'd still be cavemen and wouldn't have come as far as we have. Once we started to invent things our innate cognitive ability started to rise.

Until we started using machines to do arithmetic and paying professionals to avoid figuring out our plumbing problems. Evolution stalled when social institutions replaced individual survival skills.

@zagor Nope that's still inventions, and those inventions are being worked on and improved all the time to develop new ones.
In theory IQ should always increase in the long term longs if we keep inventing and using tools, and inventing don't have to mean building a sword it can be applied much more broadly than that. Even writing fictional work is a form of inventing.

Only way I'd see it going down is if we actually had a Wall-E universe for very long time. But that's a dystopia I don't see as a reality, humans are proven to become depressed from not being productive in some form. So they always choose to find a way to least be so in general.

Okay. But long term changes reflected reduction in impediments to brain development in children (better nutrition, vaccines and public health measures to reduce infectious diseases) that are probably not repeatable gains, schooling (longer, more abstract) could be repeated but only by changing curricula substantially and trends in most countries are towards broadening curricula rather than deepening in abstract reasoning, familiarity with the mechanics of standardised testing -- probably not repeatable. I think a defensible assumption is that we will never see similar long term trends again. I'm sure a counterargument can be made too.

Ongoing inventions are only possible because education enabled a much higher starting point than there was in the past. Newton wasn't able to start from General Relativity Theory. The Electron Microscope had to be invented before it could be used to learn about microbes.
