What's the appeal of living until you're 100?

I just don't get it. I mean, I'd like to live until I'm at least 70-80, but at 100, you'll be bound to a death bed in some nursing home with arthritis and dementia. How is that not miserable?

Humans have a heck of a strong instinct of survival. However just about all older people will agree that there is a point when the quality of life makes it pointless to continue. For example most people will not want to be artificially kept alive after a bad stroke that has turned them into a near zombie.

Just where that point is when it's no longer worth it will be different for everyone. Age alone, even well into the 90s has not reached that point. They keep going because they want to.

I saw a friend just today who is 98. I've known her for almost 50 years. She is not what she used to be, but she is still happy, likes to laugh, and enjoys company. If you asked her, she would definitely say that life is still worth it. And no, she is not bound to her death bed in a nursing home. She lives at her home, and can still get around on her own with a walker. She does have a live-in helper though, because her son insisted on it.

I read the obituary of a man that lived to be over a hundred. He was a WW2 vet and worked on the ambulance for the city of Boston. He was there during the great Boston molasses flood.
He saw men landing on the moon, heart transplants, the internet and The Beatles.

These days, nothing. Carters era is the end of a rich history. What we are creating now is not worth remembering or repeating it's just void, existing. There will be no such thing as the roaring 2020s... unless talking about an orange man.

If the old age is full of health problems then yes, it is like living a miserable life. The soul wants to break the prison of the body and fly away but the prison is so strong that it does not allow the soul to be free.

Everyone deep down knows there is nothing afterwards so it's only natural we try to cling onto whatever we have, as we are aware beings of this fact.

I am a medical student, and the goal is to prevent the loss of telomeres. If we ever manage to do that, we will be able to stop aging.

Another thing, why would anyone wanna live forever? That's even more miserable, especially with the state of the world.

The goal is to achieve transhumanism, with advances in artificial intelligence the most powerful people will create their own slave robots that will exploit resources for free and allow them to live in abundance, and most likely they will get rid of the remaining 99% of the population.

Not everyone ends up in a nursing home. But my wife shares your opinion. She may live to be 100 but says she does not want to.
