USA by a lot, assuming nukes aren't involved and everybody loses, and also assuming this is in a vacuum in which the consequences of those two going to war wouldn't also drag everyone else in as well. A war with China would be much more difficult, and have much bigger long term ramifications even after an assumed victory.

That said, while the US would outperform Russia in a hypothetical conflict, it would likely embarrass itself in many ways in the process as the realities of it's lack of readiness and superficial priorities of the last decade are revealed. The military has poor leadership right now, and it takes years to fully turn that around - as in even if it's a fully committed priority of the next four years, the cancer still won't be totally gone, and a bad administration afterwards could undo the fixes faster. The saving grace is that basically every military on the planet is also struggling to maintain what they already have let alone new technology, and the corruption and nepotism in foreign militaries (Russia being one of the worst offenders, second only to China) means the US is still doing relatively well in this respect despite itself.

Whether deserved or not, the US Intel community is fully convinced that they've been overestimating Russia's military capabilities in light of the war in Ukraine. When I was in, a lot of our conventional force-on-force training was centered around the idea that Russia was much stronger than they've turned out to be, but the problem here is that the US government and military bureaucrats have a tendency to only commit to barely good enough solutions, often with no long-term plan, and will no doubt use the opinions of the intelligence gathered to justify idiotic decisions and diversions of funds. The fact that they still refuse to acknowledge that China is the much bigger threat even though it's obvious also doesn't sit well with me.

America, Russia, and China all know that America is top dog. This is why Russia and China both would use nuclear weapons instantly if they were to enter a direct conflict with the USA. You've already heard Putin wave threats around over Ukraine if America/NATO were to get directly involved. He's not joking. A conflict with the USA was already intensely studied by Russia and China to see if they could win, and they concluded that they would lose in every scenario except through nuclear warfare. This is why Mutual Assured Destruction exists... If we enter conflict with each other, they will use nukes, and if they use nukes we will use nukes. So it's best for everyone if we use diplomacy.

Today I am not so sure. I always thought the Russian people were stronger than America, seeing as they've survived a lot of stuff especially brutal winters even during wartime, but in today's world I really don't know. Russian men tend to be alcoholics and Russian women largely outlive them, so maybe they aren't as strong of a society as I would've once thought.

Plus both America and Russia are probably softer because we have so much ease in today's world compared to other nations still struggling.

Russia, of course. You have Russia vs the world in Ukraine at the moment and Russia is still fighting on. Whereas, Ukraine is going to pull an Afghanistan before too long.

America like the USSR needs to be broken up, and for the same reasons. It is a bigger problem than solution in the world. There are no more "evil empires" to be fought and it's more about "evil organisations" - for which the USA is useless against.

You cannot send in a multi billion warship and navy seal team to "fight" a multinational ring. But such an organisation can have a lobby group in the US senate to mislead and even arm such a groups.

Going by pure game theory USA would be the winner.

However resolve and persistence are also factors here.

Americans might grow tired of the war due to minor inconveniences like slightly higher prices while being heavily influenced by propaganda while at the same time any dissenting protesters in Russia get moved down by machine gun fire before any survivors get bayoneted.

Also Russia wouldn't go to war against USA without China and others but then again USA has allies of it's own.

I'd predict reds getting kicked back into their own territory but a occupation apart from certain historical territories like Kuril islands or Königsberg being seen as unfeasible.

If the use of nuclear weapons or other weapons of mass destruction is necessary, the Russian arsenal is indeed formidable.

The USA military ended its combat mission in Afghanistan in 2014.
The Afghan Government fought the war largely by itself until collapse in 2021.
The USA military ended its combat mission in Vietnam in 1973, and was fully withdrawn in March of that year
The South Vietnamese Government (ARVN military) fought for two years by itself without USA support?

Quite the contrary, the United States was very successful initially in Vietnam and Afghanistan.
In Vietnam, the South Vietnamese government was able to take over the war by itself, and through consistent aid from the USA defeated all NVA attacks. However, the USA cut funding to South Vietnam in 1974, and this dried its resources.
When the NVA launched their invasion of the South in 1975, there was no American aid, and the South Vietnamese government collapsed due to it.
This was a choice by the USA government at the time that was more interested in its own economic crisis than keeping promises to the South Vietamese Government.
This is why Theiu spoke about the USA as a government that went against its promises

In Afghanistan, the the Afghan Government had its more successful election in 2015 (with turnout higher than even in the USA).
However, there was a horrific amount of corruption that even led to the USA threatening to withhold aid. For example, in the USA government threatened to withhold aid due to the inability of the election of 2018 to define a winner. There were claims the Election was stolen..
The Ghani regime eventually became very corrupt.. to the point that much of the Afghan government surrendered without a fight.

This was all during an era the USA military had no involvement in AFghanistan against of occasionally bombing ISIS targets.. and took place over the period of nearly a decade.
