No plan for most material things, to be honest. My plan is grab myself & my phone (to call for a fire truck and family), my child who is always with me, and exit the back door so that I can get my cat too (she sleeps in the back door conservatory). My partner has been in a house fire before so I trust that he can get himself out. If the fire is at the back of the house, I will exit out the front or the side door with my child, place him down on the grass and find something to break the conservatory window to get my cat out.


We have nothing worth a lot in the house, other than some electronics that we barely use like TV’s and gaming systems. There are many charitable organisations in my town who can help us with essentials that we lose in the fire, like baby clothes and bedding. We have family 2 streets away who can take us in. Our home is a rental so it’s not our responsibility if it’s damaged in a fire, the landlords insurance should cover that. And we have no insurance of any sort.

No insurance. They are a con. Most find an excuse to not pay out. Learned that as a kid from my mum when she tried to make a claim. And I don't have anything super valuable to care about. Except my money.. so fire proof safe is a yes! And fire extinguisher in kitchen yes.

I have a fire proof safe, but there is not much in there except some documentation and computer backups.

I have smoke detectors, including CO detection and the newer type with less false positives (ion type?).

I have a couple of fire extinguishers, but they are old and not charged. I really need to take care of that, especially since I sometimes use the fireplace.

I dumped home owners insurance long ago. I did the math and decided the premium was a total ripoff. Premiums are so high because people keep turning in claims for little stuff instead of having insurance ONLY for catastrophic losses.

The insurance math worked out to a 1 in 220 chance per year of a total loss. Or you could think of a group of 100 houses with a total loss once every 2.2 years. Total losses are not anywhere near that common.

I don't consider it dangerous. I'm just playing the odds and the odds are heavily in my favor. I've already saved enough on premiums to to a few major repairs. Or another way of putting it, I've already saved more on premiums than the average insurance claim.

Also, you never really have a total loss. You don't lose the property itself. You don't lose some expensive things like sewer and water hookup, or impact fees (if there are any). You also don't lose the foundation, driveway, sidewalks, etc.

Most insurance claims are nickle dime-stuff. That's not what insurance is supposed to be for. Insurance companies sell using the fear factor.

good point, its good reminder. that crap could happen where I live, was very dry this year and lots of trees. one little mistake or idiot or e-car decides to blow... and whole place burns down. We won't have near the resources CA has.

we have the basics... I need to review with house members how to get out.

I have house insurance on both my homes. It costs a bundle. I have many fire extinguishers in different places around my house. I have a gun safe but it would be a good idea to have a safety deposit box.
