It's not hated it's just not appreciated. Most people don't care if you're a good person they just care are you fun to be around and/or are you useful in some way. Anything else is secondary unless they really like you or something. You have to do it just because you think it's right there is no reward for it.

Survival. They assume you are weak because they do not have the strength to be the same. It's far easier to screw people over than do things the right way. How life is set up.
