The Gulf of Mexico isn't near America is it?

Question

Here's an admiralty chart of the region. The deep "Gulf" Part is closer to Mexico hence it's the Gulf of Mexico.

Now we all know Trump has renamed it but it doesn't follow that other countries have to follow suit. So if you're not American what you call it?

The name America comes from the 15th Century explorer Americus Vespucci, credited with discovering much of the Americas, both North and South America.

So Yes, the Gulf of Mexico IS near America, both the United States of America and the Estados Unidos de Mexico, as well as the island of Cuba.

Still, the name Gulf of Mexico has been used for years and there's really no reason to change it.

If you consider the Spanish language, Mexico is masculine while America is feminine, so changing Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America is actually changing its gender. I wonder if anyone explained that to Trump.

Okay... So as quite a lot of people pointed out, the Gulf of America is literally encircled by America. It could even be called the Gulf of North America, to be honest.

Now, as for an international name for Gulf of America, how about Gulf of Destiny? You know, what President Donald Trump meant to do when He renamed Gulf of Mexico as Gulf of America was to remind everyone of an old US policy known as Manifest Destiny, claiming that any country in America is under the influence and sometimes protection of the USA.

The USA has coastline on the Gulf from Las Palomas Wildlife Management Area Boca Chica, in the West, to Key West in the West.

But there is another ‘Gulf of America’ it is known as Nakhodka Bay or Nakhodka Gulf, historically called the Gulf of America, is a bay of the Peter the Great Gulf of the Sea of Japan, on which is sited the port of Nakhodka. It is part of the Primorsky Krai of Russia.

I don't know the exact boundaries for the Gulf of Mexico. I don't even know if well defined boundaries even exist in the oceans.

A straight line from Cuba to the Yukatan Peninsula seems to make a clean southern boundary for the Gulf of Mexico. South of that line is the Caribbean. In that case, it does appear to have more US coastline than Mexican coastline.

It doesn't matter though. I'll keep calling it the Gulf of Mexico. So will 99.999% of everyone else.

Calling it the Gulf of the Americas would make more sense than the Gulf of America.
But I prefer the traditional name - Gulf of Mexico. It sounds fun and exotic. Gulf of America sounds stupid.
Alternatively, it is the Caribbean Sea. "We're going on a Caribbean vacation!"

I think the re-naming is a bit silly to be honest. That being said, both countries have almost equal amounts of territory touching the gulf. Mexico has about 1,700 miles of land touching the gulf and the USA has about 1,650 miles of land touching it.
