Now we all know Trump has renamed it but it doesn't follow that other countries have to follow suit. So if you're not American what you call it?

The name America comes from the 15th Century explorer Americus Vespucci, credited with discovering much of the Americas, both North and South America.
So Yes, the Gulf of Mexico IS near America, both the United States of America and the Estados Unidos de Mexico, as well as the island of Cuba.
Still, the name Gulf of Mexico has been used for years and there's really no reason to change it.
If you consider the Spanish language, Mexico is masculine while America is feminine, so changing Gulf of Mexico to Gulf of America is actually changing its gender. I wonder if anyone explained that to Trump.
i was naked on those beaches
Okay... So as quite a lot of people pointed out, the Gulf of America is literally encircled by America. It could even be called the Gulf of North America, to be honest.
Now, as for an international name for Gulf of America, how about Gulf of Destiny? You know, what President Donald Trump meant to do when He renamed Gulf of Mexico as Gulf of America was to remind everyone of an old US policy known as Manifest Destiny, claiming that any country in America is under the influence and sometimes protection of the USA.
it's by florida west coast and texas east coast and extends to mexico hence gulf of mexico
Exactly!
I think UN resolution is necessary in this case
That would be a waste of time @freyared
Geographic features are named by the countries that border them in their own language. Often with conflicting names from different countries. Mexico has no reason to really care if America calls it the gulf of America. Mexico speaks Spanish and can call it whatever they like in their language.

I will continue to call it the Gulf Of Mexico, lmfao. I can’t believe this is what our President wanted to pursue on Day One, of all the petty bullshit🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️😂😂😂
I'm waiting to see what happens to the state "New Mexico" :) Plus, per Google, there are at least 10 towns in the US named Mexico - and there are countless streets, neighborhoods, restaurants, etc with Mexico in the name. The folks at Google Maps are gonna be busy :)
Technically he could rename any country in the world. As could any government.
The USA has coastline on the Gulf from Las Palomas Wildlife Management Area Boca Chica, in the West, to Key West in the West.
But there is another ‘Gulf of America’ it is known as Nakhodka Bay or Nakhodka Gulf, historically called the Gulf of America, is a bay of the Peter the Great Gulf of the Sea of Japan, on which is sited the port of Nakhodka. It is part of the Primorsky Krai of Russia.
The question as worded is laughable. The Gulf Of Mexico touches North America, Central America, and South America. So yes, it's near every conceivable version of America. For crap's sake people, take a look at a friggin map!
Geography lessons aside, is this the biggest problem our mentally challenged orange idiot can find to work on? Who cares if we call it the Gulf Of Mexico, America, or Suriname? How about the economy? How about those grocery prices? How about avian flu?
This is a ploy to please Trump's less educated supporters so that they can say" Trump showed them fuckin Mexicans he changed the name to Gulf of America" a little prize for the stupid lower class motherfuckers who supported him. Something that don't mean jackshit to the real world. The rich educated billionaire motherfuckering supporters like Musk have more important bigger prizes in mind like big tax cuts.
Who cares, it's ours now. They should learn to speak English. But if I was president, after doing this I would only accept hawt female immigrants.
I don't know the exact boundaries for the Gulf of Mexico. I don't even know if well defined boundaries even exist in the oceans.
A straight line from Cuba to the Yukatan Peninsula seems to make a clean southern boundary for the Gulf of Mexico. South of that line is the Caribbean. In that case, it does appear to have more US coastline than Mexican coastline.
It doesn't matter though. I'll keep calling it the Gulf of Mexico. So will 99.999% of everyone else.
Gulf of Mexico , end of story.
Might as well label Greenland “Trump’s Oil Barrel” and Canada “Trump’s NDAye”.
Hell, I didn’t even know we could just rename places on a map… If it pleases the Orange Man, we should change “North America” to “United States of America” and he won’t know the difference with all the yes men behind him.
Calling it the Gulf of the Americas would make more sense than the Gulf of America.
But I prefer the traditional name - Gulf of Mexico. It sounds fun and exotic. Gulf of America sounds stupid.
Alternatively, it is the Caribbean Sea. "We're going on a Caribbean vacation!"
I like the name Gulf of Mexico. Who cares what the water is called. It always sounds like a vacation every time I go. Gulf of America sounds like I didn’t travel far enough for a real vacation.
Trump is a douchebag. That's all you need to know.
I suspect he will die in office from pissing off the wrong people.
truly... it should be called the Gulf of OPEC
it has more oil rigs than fishes... and more oil spilled than plankton too
He can call his wife's crotch the gulf of America for all anyone one cares. Doesn't mean anything to the rest of the world either.
I live in Florida and as far I know the entire west coast and panhandle are on the Gulf of America/Mexico
Well said
I'm USA American and it's the Gulf of MEXICO

His "best people" assessment of him...
The deepest point of that body of water is called Sigsbee. So if depth is going to be the naming criteria, then it should be called the Gulf Of Sigsbee.
I think the re-naming is a bit silly to be honest. That being said, both countries have almost equal amounts of territory touching the gulf. Mexico has about 1,700 miles of land touching the gulf and the USA has about 1,650 miles of land touching it.
That UK education system sure is lacking...
I'd prefer "Gulf of the Americas" (it borders North, South and Central America), but for now I'm still saying "Gulf of Mexico".
What are you talking about? I live in Florida on the west coast. All of the water off the beach here is the Gulf. Also there is North and South America. Not "North Mexico".
It is all North America. Perhaps a compromise by calling it the Gulf of North America; so people know that we are referring to the continent and not the country.
Personally I think the whole thing should belong to me since we're claiming things I'm gonna participate too :)
I'm all for keeping everywhere around the world status quo, why change everything, it's our history.
Let the clowns do what they want... The rest of the world will stick with the correct name
So true i don't know why the follow this idiot
America doesn't just refer to the United States. America includes North America, South America, Central America, etc.
Trump bought a truck load of sharpies (using our money) to change the name in all the atlases he can find.
Guess what? We didn't change the name to Freedom Fries either.
When Republicans elect a retard, we just ignore them.
Actually, for Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida, it’s a major coastline.
Who cares? You guys renamed "Canal La Manche" to "English Channel", so you shouldn't be complaining.
Also, no one complained when Antigua and Barbuda changed the name of their highest mountain from Boggy Peak to Mt. Obama.
I'm curious what Tucker Carlson thinks of this though, as he was bitching about Turkey and Kiev changing their names
It's OK to change what belongs to you, but the Gulf of Mexico doesn't belong to America.
It belongs to both Mexico and the United States, just like Canal La Manche belongs to both the UK and France.
Also, "America" is actually a term for an entire geographic region, not a single country, so under THAT logic, "Gulf of America" actually makes sense.
I can't believe you're getting so worked up about the "Gulf of Mexico"s name being changed.
Go play on Google Maps. It still says "Gulf of Mexico", but they've already announced that they're changing it, so go enjoy it while it's still under the old name.
English channel is British, right up to a few yards off the French beach. If you wade out nipple deep, you're standing on British ground. Just ask any of the Frenchies here.
"Major boundaries include the territorial waters of the UK and France, extending 12 nautical miles from their coasts"
Ah here we go. This is what I wanted
sovereignlimits.com/.../...K_Jersey-01-600x439.png
Fine, let's ask @julie4
Let's ask her, right now
@Julie4 What about her claim that as soon as you get your nipples wet, you're in the UK?
It's La Manche. Not "Canal La Manche", dumbass.
A lot of places in Europe are named differently from one language to another.
The Thames River is "La Tamise" in French
Napoli is "Naples" in English
France is "Frankreich" in German
Dover is "Douvres" in French
London is "Londres" in French
Deutschland is "Germany" in English and "Allemagne" in French
... etc.
That's language differences, not renaming within a language.
@purplepoppy Quite. However, the English Channel is also known as "The Channel", which is basically the same thing as "La Manche". That's not exactly renaming within a language. That's adding an adjective.
Plus, historically, the adjective "English" appears or used to appear in many languages, including French, as the ethymology dates from antiquity onwards, with the Roman "Mare Britannicum". I know for a fact that "La Manche Anglaise" is sometimes seen in older french publications.
@purplepoppy Anyway, another 'problem' solved by Musk, since he wants to rename it the George Washington Channel. 😄😓 Praise be to our dear old nazi billionaire!

@Danzigdawson Fuck you asshole! Why are you insulting me? I didn't insult YOU? Don't ever fucking call me a "dumbass!"
I visited Québec City and the people were very polite to me, but now I see it's cunts like YOU that are the reason people hate Quebecers!
I don't understand why you called me a dumbass! Asshole piece of shit! Don't ever reply to my posts again you disrespectful down syndrome!
You Leftists only know how to insult people
There are international boundaries off the coast if each country, let America's be called the Gulf of America, Mexico the Gulf of Mexico, and beyond that just the Atlantic Ocean. It can become a standard.
You know that Mexico, United States of America, and Canada are all apart of North America, right?
I honestly rather it stay the Gulf of Mexico because I think it is pointless to change the name.
Donald Trump is imposing the 25% tariffs on both Mexico and Canada. This will have widespread negative consequences for the price of food and everyday goods.
Bravo, MAGA. Idiots.
It was and still is the Gulf of Mexico.
All 2800 miles border on North America. But that isn't what you meant. over 1400 miles border on the USA.
This is north America. The entirety of the gulf is connected to it
I never ''asked it's number''.
So I can't call it.
You might as well start calling it the Gulf of America because this is not going away.
It's only a juvenile punch at the Mexican president. Proves he's a Man baby, yet again.
@dustybiker2 Is showed strong leadership/ Notice that she agreed to wait in Mexico again?
She is showing strong leadership by using tact, not bullying.
@dustybiker2 She folded like a cheap suit.
Just wait. 🙂
lol typical Trump move to make his uneducated base feel good. Irrelevant move and it’s the Gulf of Mexico, and will ever be called that.
Who cares? I think its great that president Trump changed the name I think it sounds pretty cool.
The US has more coastline on the gulf than Mexico, smart guy
It's like the Maldives in Argentina. Brits call them differently, the rest of the world don't
It's right in the middle of north and south America
It's in the Americas so calling it the gulf of America makes sense. America doesn't always refer to the US as the US are just united states within the Americas.
The Gulf has twice as much beach side as Mexico.
New Orleans, Mobile and some other Southern cities abut the Gulf of Trump-I mean, America !!!
@Red_Arrow "Abut" means very near, but Trump IS a butt !!!
@Red_Arrow Thank you, Red_Arrow!!!(Not really my concern, but are you First Nations?)
@Red_Arrow Don't know if I am, but as a lad I lived next door to some Status Indian cousins who are as black as I.
I don't see the issue with it being the Gulf of America. america can mean North America anyway
Yucky shark invested water!
The UK occupies Ireland...
We don't.
Gulf of America you mean.
Gulf of stupidity and waste of time.
People forget Texas was part of Mexico.
Sad but true
Gulf of Mexican tacos
The gulf of Trump
United States of Earth has a nice ring to it.
Of course it is
