Honestly, I find it clownish.

25% on Canada means they'll finally stop smuggling maple syrup in their prison wallets.
Here's the real math:
China's gonna counter by flooding Walmart with dildos shaped like Hunter Biden's laptop. Meanwhile, Canada will retaliate by unleashing Celine Dion's greatest hits on TikTok—true economic warfare.
(Leans in closer, breath smelling of Cheeto dust and mountain dew)
You wanna know why it's only 10%? Because Daddy Trump needs those Chinese sweatshops to keep pumping out his red ties and tiny-handed gloves. Can't have the libtards seeing him naked during those "executive time" masturbation marathons in the Oval Office.
PRO TIP: Invest in lube stocks now—when the trade war hits, we'll all be getting fucked raw anyway.
So you don't understand what a tariff is do you.
Trump isn't taxing China even one penny. A tariff is not levied on a foreign nation. The USA has no ability to do that.
A tariff is a punitive policy tool used to discourage the purchase of foreign goods by Americans which the US government absolutely can do. tRump will tax foreign goods coming into this country. The importer (Nike, Apple, Ford, Clothing Brands, Camera Brands, Computer Brands, etc.) will pay the tariff. The tariff is effectively a tax. When those corporations pay that tax it becomes part of their operating cost.
Guess what happens next. Those corporations importing stuff from foreign sources will simply increase their prices to pass that increased cost of doing business on to the US consumer. Yeah, Americans will be paying the tariffs / taxes, not the Chinese. The idea is to get the American consumer to stop buying Chinese made products by artificially jacking up the prices. tRump will be taking money out of your pocket.
Ya know what that's called? Inflation! So much for the orange genius's plan to bring down inflation. Yer hero tRump is going to use the US government to increase inflation almost instantaneously. He is the dumbest person to ever sit in the White House. The only thing dumber than tRump is his MAGA supporters who are cheering for tariffs to take money out of their pockets because they don't even understand what a tariff is or how it is used in economic policy. Sorta how they believed that Mexico was gonna pay for that wall!
Trump is the best president ever in history. Last year a venezuelan bump into my car. We the American's we were paying central Latinos bills. Sick I don't allowed Venezuelan in my store.
Another libtard, Why?
Trump is the biggest embarrassment the US has ever produced.

10% could be the difference between a product being viable or not. That tarriff likely won't punish the big boys who have conglomerates. Like it'll hurt them, but won't sink them, maybe it would even help them get more power in Beijing.
Granted, with how reliant we are on Chinese goods, and how little we actually manufacture in the US, it's going to hurt us a lot more in the short term, and likely we'll just import from another country who will fleece us.
It won’t work.
So long as china have the monopoly on cheap manufacturing via the exploitation of children they will always be capable of producing cheaper goods than the US.
So even if the trade taxes went up and traders had to raise their prices to cover it that will barely make in a dent in how competitive Chinese prices remain.
Just look at how western Europe fights then off:
They create this narrative that buying Chinese products is horrible thing because you’re encouraging an industry of child slavery on the other side of the world.
That actually works better especially with the more liberal communities who love a cause to rally behind.
But the sad reality is that the only way to truly balance the scale is to find even cheaper means of production and lower the prices of everything that you could import from china
That would mean having to play their atrocious game and democratic nations built around freedom will never stand by and allow such vile abuses of human life
In the end, that's not really the problem for me. I note that Trump had promised massive taxes against China, his admirers applaud TRUMP on this subject as if it were the messiah come on earth, but I note that Trump is going to tax an ally like Canada while they have an insignificant trade deficit with Canada.
Trump's policy is to make China great again 😂
@Zack-Bann Umm, respectfully to Julie, I don't think there is any competition there...
The way a tariff works is that the buyer has to pay the tariff on products from those countries. The manufacturer makes it and charges a set price. The tariff is charged to the buyer. So a product comes from Canada for a certain price, but the buyer has to pay 25% additional. If a product costs 100 dollars, the seller gets the 100 dollars, but the buyer has to pay 125 dollars to get it. How does that hurt the Canadians? It is hurting the buyers in America. And the tariff goes to the American government, which means Trump. So Americans are paying Trump 25 dollars for each 100 dollars they pay the seller. So the MAGA types are cheering Trump for costing us more money while not hurting the sellers at all.
I'm not sure if it is serious but I'm guessing that he's more than 50% ready to do it. He just admitted recently that tarrifs will put short term hardship to the economy. Yeah that means the experts are right in that it will all get passed onto the consumer not China and not Canada.
It will be short term because if he does unload this he will back track it and pretend it's a victory and when his inflated tarrif prices come back down to today's prices he will say he lowered inflation... Just remember it won't be lower than now. Lol
It's not clownish. Too many corrupt American officials have taken bribes and favors in exchange for negotiating China-centric trade deals. I remember reading the language of one deal with referred to China as a "developing economy" which justified the disequilibrium... bullshit.
The short term may see inflation, but it will spur domestic growth of business and production WITHIN the U. S.
Frankly, I don't mind paying +10% for a product that was made in the USA by Americans.
They ALL need to start paying their FAIR SHARE of America's taxes for leeching off of Americans for decades! Thank God we finally have a President that GETS IT!
Do people like you there is strategy involved in everyone of his terror policies. And that includes China. You're taking too simplistic a view. The percentages are not currently what matters it's a negotiating tactic.
What are the negotiating tactics here? Just a few months ago, Trump was promising to tax China massively. What's more, China is an economic predator, stealing American data, industrial secrets and so on, not Canada. I look at actions, not words.
But I've understood Trump's policy, which is to make China great again 😅
That is completely ridiculous. Trump imposed tariffs on China in his first term and China's response was to lower their prices to offset the tariffs. They knew that they had no choice or they would be out of business.
That means that China paid our taxes not America saving Americans billions of dollars.
I don't care what he did in his first term because even in his first term, the usa still had a huge deficit against china which means the americans pay for the chinese. What's more, before coming to power for re-election, Trump threatened to impose massive taxes on the Chinese, and he's simply not doing it.
And that doesn't stop the Chinese from continuing to steal American industrial secrets , oh and they're sending drugs too now.
Alright I wasn't going to explain this to you but I have a free moment so here it is:
The tariffs on Mexico and Canada is to get their asses in gear to shut down the illegal immigration into America, stop the gangs that a destroying our society and the fentanyl poisoning of American citizens that is murdering hundreds of thousands of our young people.
If the lefties in Mexico and Canada do what Trump is telling them to do I predict the tariffs will be very short lived. And I think they will have no choice but to do it because it will hurt them FAR more than it will hurt us. Mexico is already in big trouble and Canada will collapse without America.
As to China we already have experience with that. Trump put a tariff on them in his first term.
China, knowing that it would put them out of business if they didn't cut their prices, reduced their prices on everything they sell America by 15 to 25%. That was more than the tariff.
Net result? Americans MADE MONEY on the tariffs and CHINA was the one who took the hit.
That is one reason why inflation during Trump's first term averaged only 1.9%.
We do not want to destroy China yet because after decades of allowing our industrial base to decay, we still rely on them for some necessary products. Trump can't change that in only 4 years. The next presidents will have to continue his pro growth policies so we can decouple ourselves from China. So the 10% tariff on China is REAL. The idea is to force them to lower their prices again for another win on China tariffs in Trump's second term.
China also sends a lot of drugs to Americans, folds your Secret industrial, your data, has an industrial capacity that crushes the industrial capacity of Americans, has a purchasing power greater than Americans, represents the greatest geostrategic threat, crushes you in trade, because whatever you say, it is you who have a huge trade deficit with the Chinese not them. and you tax at only 10%, while Trump had promised taxes over 50%. You can't be serious.
In reality, you've relocated your industries so much that if China decides to retaliate with an excessive tariff, Americans will see their cost of living rise dramatically.
I don't disagree that China is America's biggest threat or that China engages in all of those nefarious activities. But destroying their economy is not an option. We need to moderate the tariffs enough so that it hurts them and keeps them in check, but doesn't hurt them so much that we are shooting ourselves in the foot.
The tariffs can always be ratcheted up after seeing what effect they have. I think it is the perfect start to putting the pressure on China without getting into physical wars like the Democrats love to do.
Good so now we can go out for a cup of coffee! 🙂
Deal! I'm buying. 🙂
That's how I roll baby! 😉
It took less than a day for Mexico to cave.
I rest my case.
Illegal border crossings off 93% after 2 weeks of Trump! Mexico folded in less than 1 day after he imposed a tariff. Is anyone SANE still anti-Trump? ↗
@RingOfFire
Sorry I'm not impressed because the same thing happened in 2019: an announcement of higher tariffs followed by a deal in extremis with Mexico... for what result? Who's taking the other for a ride in this story?
Border crossings plummeted because of that deal! It wasn't until Biden became president in January 2021 that the illegal crossings started skyrocketing!
Because Biden undid all of the successful policies that Trump had in place!
I simply note that even with similar threats and agreements in 2019, success has not been forthcoming. The problem is that Mexico is a failed state. There is an enormous amount of corruption in this country, and unless the USA helps Mexico to create a reliable state, I don't see how the problems linked to immigration, crime, drugs etc. will be solved in the long term.
Now it will be interesting to see whether Trump will apply tariffs to the EU. Trump seems to think that only the tax countries will suffer and not the Americans, but if the Europeans agree, they'll be able to retaliate, and if the Europeans suffer, that won't be very good for the American economy either. In fact, just with the tariffs with Canada, the stock market has started to fall, and Trump hasn't really appreciated that.
So either the two parties will negotiate and Trump will declare victory, even if that's not the case, or the Europeans won't be the only ones to suffer.
I'm afraid that the EU's problem is the same as Mexico and Canada's problem and the problem of virtually every other country in the world. They need the United States far more than the United States needs them.
It's the dirty little secret they never want to talk about. Since the United States bailed out the rest of the world in two world wars, over time other countries have taken for granted that the United States will always protect them at the expense of the American taxpayer. But that may not be the case anymore. Americans are sick and tired of paying all the bills and being called warmongers and other derogatory terms by those who are taking advantage of our generosity.
And we're tired of being mistreated in trade deals. President Trump isn't asking for anything that America hasn't earned, he's asking the other countries to pay their fair share both of the cost of defending the free world and with fair trade.
He's addressing something that the rest of the world has been abusing for decades and following the mandate of the American people in the last election. We are sick and tired of carrying the world on our back and being disrespected in return. That's not going to happen anymore with Trump in office.
Not really, the usa is a very important market, but if you think that the usa can be self-sufficient then you're totally wrong, in fact the usa (they're not the only ones) are dependent on supply chains, don't forget that today the share of industry in American GDP is low and that therefore for many products or for key factors like technology which is one of the essential links in the American economy, Americans depend on imports, a real trade war would not only hurt Europeans or Asia, for example, but America as well, which would also suffer greatly: job losses, inflation, a fall in the stock market, loss of confidence in the American economy, etc.
As with any weapon the question isn't who would suffer if the weapon is deployed, the question is who would suffer MORE.
And the answer is everyone except the USA.
You do not engage in a battle knowing that the ultimate outcome must inevitably be to surrender. That's the whole point of using a deterrent. And America, being the biggest consumer and customer in the world is holding all the cards. We have by far the best deterrent to trade war in the world.
it's simply not true, the American economy is dependent on imports, again in key sectors like technology, the usa depends on supply chains.
The consequences will be job losses, galloping inflation, a fall in the stock market, loss of confidence in the economy, and this would not be very good.
You may be convinced that only other countries in the world will suffer and not the USA, but believe me, in a real trade war, the USA will suffer too, and not just a little.
And what would be the consequences for the other countries?
I don't think you understand my point. My point isn't that the United States would not pay a price. My point is that the countries that engage in such a trade war with the United States would fare far worse in the United States would. And therefore they will do anything to avoid such a conflict to begin with.
Well so far Mexico caved, Venezuela caved, Colombia caved, and every other country he threatened caved. And Canada is having a heart attack and will almost certainly cave soon.
So all the evidence so far shows President Trump's strategy to be a resounding success.
You know I hate being right all the time. But somebody's got to do it...
"President Donald Trump on Monday agreed to pause the implementation of planned U. S. tariffs on imports from Canada for at least 30 days, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said.
In both cases, the pauses came after those countries agreed to take steps toward preventing the trafficking of the deadly opioid fentanyl into the United States."
Time for hot chocolate. How do you like yours?
I'll have what you're having. 🙂
Cheers! 🌞
I would take it to be a negotiation position and an accommodation will be found. With Putin, Trump hasn't reached out. Why? If he did he would be the supplicant and degrade his negotiating position.
Trump has done more negotiation than we have so he is probably good at it.
It will either work or it won’t. I think it could backfire because, while the US had tariffs when it grew to become the largest industrial power on earth, we currently lack manufacturing in key sectors and are dependent on the Chinese. However, it is very possible Trump is talking a big game and will negotiate minor concessions from China before backing down.
well it is serious. but not for Canada. who do you think will pay these tariffs? not the nations who are exporting their wares to the us. they will keep their prices the same. you (the American citizens) will have to pay the premium. because in many cases you don't even have the option of just taking the local product cause lots of things aren't produced locally. so you're stuck with paying the tariffs.
I support the tariffs on China, we cannot let a non-democratic state win the AI race. I disagree with Canada and Mexico, Canada is a close neighbor and with Mexico it would be good to use the carrot and stick approach, instead of outsourcing jobs to China outsource them to Mexico and then migrants will have less reason to come to the US.
@julie4 finally a stock market crash or global recession scale of 2008, is finally near once again? Or maybe on the scale of 2020 stock crash? 🎉 Hooray hooray I'm wishing for a stock market crash lol 😁
it won't last long... it never does
so, it will be fine, just like it was every other time
There is no point to his tariff's, except to somehow try and pay for his tax cuts in a convoluted scheme to defraud the average American, as usual. Scump is a disgrace to human kind, and only his supporters are worse.
He's a three year old with a loaded handgun. That's the best I can say.
10% on China & 25% on Canada? Ist his guy nutso?
I predict he'll reverse himself quickly declaring victory
Well fuel is gonna get a LOT more expensive south of the border
You're saying it's clownish because it should be more on China?
After my respective experiences with customs officials in Canada and China, this sounds good to me. Stick it to the 'nucks.
It is very easy to be childish. Much harder to clean up the mess.
Last burden will go to the consumer not the seller
Very serious since it will only hurt US consumers.
good. now we can stop buying potatoes from Canada when we grow them here in the US. 😁
Especially when they'll just put an equl or greater tarrif on us.
It's not taxing China it's taxing the American companies that import products from China.
Have fun paying more for everything America, just remember you voted for this.
Make the depression great again!
Truth
Above all, it's dumb and counterproductive.
trump is god abide by his wants
Well he's free to do what he want
Yes. For different reasons,
Bring it.
