No, foreign countries flood are market with cheaply made goods. People buy them because they are cheap. If the exporting country does not absorb the tariff nobody will buy their junk.
Thump imposed tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminum. Did anybody see the cost of steel and aluminum goods go up? The answer is no since when Trump left office inflation was a small 1.4%

Can't let countries import there stuff here free of charge while the U. S. gets taxed by other countries when they import goods.

Trump doesn't care if prices get higher for people. He thinks if he tariffs other countries it means he wins. Just plain ole fair trade that benefits everyone? Nooooo. It must be about him and he must convince himself he won. As for Republicans in general, most have been unable to criticize one single word or action so their defense is absolute no matter what he does.

Republicans do support free trade. Tariffs are a tool against other nations using unfair trade practices. The threat of tariffs usually compel the foreign government to stop trying to exploit the US. Democrats typically let other nations get the better deal over the US, (In exchange for millions in bribes, of course)
