It might be for sale and has anyone asked the greenlanders. Greenland and Canada are the only two countries in the Americas that haven't had a revolution and the only two that still have a European monarch as head of state. Viva la revolution.

The people of Greenland and Canada seem quite happy as they are. Neither of them cares to partake of the economy, the foreign relations, the war-making, or the healthcare system of the US.

If the Greenland natives had the ability to control the island they would have a say and we might not care if they were independent.

As it stands they don't control the island so really it is open to whom ever can control the island. Currently it is Denmark nominally by way of significant forign military aid of these united States.

If Denmark abandons the island as they may do if the tiny greenland population asks it will be whom ever shows up.

The U. S. wants to control Greenland because it is a stragtic vital part of North America for the defense of North America.

The fact is even thou the Danes have reduced the Greenland population to a state of abject welfare degeneration and dependency, 60% of them want independence.

That however is not relevant because they are incapable of controlling that island. Meaning the moment they get independence the island is up for grabs by everyone who is. Including hostile powers like Russia and China who are not at all obvious to its tragic value in threatening the rest of North America.

Additionally the European claim to Greenland is in violation of the long standing Monroe Doctrine, so we are not inclined to allow any other power to claim the island. As such America can and must take the island as we are already paying for its defense.
If the Greenland population ever becomes sufficiently numerous to defend they can have independence. Until then their claim to such is just a joke of a country is a strategically vital area.

@monorprise Greenland has for a considerable time like places called Hawai and Alaska are closer to other nations than they are to their parent nation. Taiwan is another so is Japan and you could Ireland as a former British colony. Then there's Australia, New Zealand, etc.,
Are you suggesting that those places should no longer have autonomy over their sovereignty that the new clown in the Whyte Howse should be able to dictate who they're run by?
The US does not OWN the continent any more than it owns the Gulf of MEXICO, the very notion is idiotic posturing.

@Shiprex Greenland is important because of its position in the north sea as the the ice is melting meaning new trade routes and access to oil/gas drilling and fracking. You see the Russians starting to build bases on their northern boarders. Greenland is going to be worth trillions every year in the future.
